View Full Version : Trepanning (a hole in the head)
Trepanning. The procedure where you drill a small hole into your skull (not your brain) to bring back a 'normal' equilibrium to your body. It's said to increase energy and higher consciousness due to increased blood flow. It's been around since before your gods were born (that's old! :p )
It's NOT to remove demons (as was the popular view of the black ages). It's been used in many cultures at various times in our history.
What are your views on it?

My skull already has holes in it designed to allow air intake, food and water intake, sound intake and to fit eyeballs in. Exempting a surgeon needing direct access to my brain or to relieve pressure that is an imminent threat to my health, my skull doesn't need any more holes than it already has. Weird theories have their time and place but not when they involve poking new holes in my head.

And for surgeons to do this, I expect a ton of testing first---MRIs, CT scans, etc.

One of the characters in the series "Dead Like Me" died drilling a hole in his skull, but I did see a film once where somebody actually trepanned herself:
Self-Trepanation: A DIY Skylight For Your Brain (http://www.science20.com/brain_candyfeed_your_mind/selftrepanation_diy_skylight_your_brain)
I'd avoid unnecessary surgery. But I'm not a big fan of bod mod, anyway...

It's still done occasionally to deal with hematoma following skull injury. Greek medical texts suggest it was also done unnecessarily in an attempt to cure things like epilepsy; luckily the mortality rate was very low. I was astonished to read about crackpots who trepan themselves - ouch!

I suspect a number of politicians have holes in their head. Probably the result of an anal transplant... ;)

I already have issues with my brain (epilepsy). Don't need a drill to add to it.
