"guy, you realize you're the only person in the world that wants to eat raw onions in any way, shape, or form, right???" But I tried it anyway.

What's wrong with raw onions? I've never heard of any stigma towards eating it raw. That's how you put it on sandwiches, and according to subway anything that can be a sandwich can be a salad.

The only things that I ever put in a waldorf salad that are usually cooked are mayo and walnuts, and I've never even seen onions in one.

No, no, there's no stigma about it. That was me just expressing MY level of dislike of raw onion. It was meant to be a joke.

There's no mayo in this waldorf salad, nor were there any nuts.

It was tasty, it's just that I no like raw onions at all, so I was pretty shocked that it was quite yummy.

Raw chocolate truffles!

http://www.smokinhotmom.com/2010/12/raw-cacao-truffles-healthy-candy/

I added a bit of xylitol, so ours aren't REALLY raw. They were still a bit too bitter for me before. I added 2 tblsp xylitol. Also, I don't like nibs, they're also too bitter for me. :p So I put those in the food processor first and pulverized them. Other than that, I followed the recipe, and they are pretty darned great!

And raw cacao is a superfood!

http://www.fitday.com/fitness-articles/nutrition/healthy-eating/the-nutrition-of-cocoa-nibs.html

They are a one of the best dietary sources of magnesium as well as a good source of calcium, iron, copper, zinc and potassium. (this is why some of us (cough, me) crave this stuff around you-know-when (aunt flo's visit) ). Studies show that cocoa nibs have higher antioxidant levels than blueberries, red wine and green tea. The antioxidants in cocoa nibs are also more stable than in other foods and are easy for the body to assimilate.

Wasabi peas, again. My mum got me some a few months ago because they were reduced and she thought, 'Jemma likes Japanese stuff.. wasabi is Japanese.. so naturally she'll like these'. I HATE wasabi. Or so I thought. Those peas were soo addictive. The shop ran out though, and it's one of those stores that sells things cheaply because they're nearing their sell-by dates. And you know, they hadn't banked on me discovering the peas so sold them for pennies, thinking no one in North Shields could possibly want to eat them. I really think only I was buying them. I KNOW I had left 3 packets, and a week later, there were 3 packets left.. which I also bought..

So today, after weeks of cravings, I marched myself to China town and bought a huge bag of smaller portion bags. That was, lets see now.. 6 hours ago. I'm now sitting here next to four empty packets... They're really small, honest. like those little boxes of raisins you can buy for kids packed lunches. Oh who am I kidding? I know this is naughty.

Just had the most fabulous salad. I was feeling creative and didn't have much to put in it. Well, not the usual things I put in my salads. There was just a load of spinach and the lettuce leaves I have growing in pots on my kitchen windowsill. So.. I started with those, but then I added: cottage cheese with chives, parsley from my windowsill, a small handfull of mixed nuts and raisens, chopped olives and a few slices of jalapino..

I can't believe I've been eating lettuce, cherry tomatoes sliced bell peppers and cucumber and calling that a salad all this time!

So I decided to make my own special trail mix for when I need some major energy at work. By the time 8pm rolls around, I'm tanking on sugar. And I don't want to buy mix because it's expensive and has things I don't want. So I went to the Mexican market and found they have nuts in bins way cheaper then Whole Foods.

My special mix:
Chili lemon peanuts
smoked almonds
walnut halves
pepitas *pumpkin seeds
dried cranberries
chocolate covered raisins
shredded coconut

I mixed the whole thing in a tupperware container with a cup scooper. I can then place servings in a ziplocked baggy and take to work. I think I might have spent $10. But it's exactly what I want and I have about a week and a half worth. And a healthy snack instead of chips or candy.

That's what I do too. I get a couple things from the dollar store--dried bananas, sunflower seeds, yogurt raisins, dark chocolate dried cherries, dried cranberries, chili lime peanuts and pumpkin seeds and mix 'em up. I do "kid mix" the same way--chex mix, popcorn, pretzels, goldfish, animal cookies, and one small bag of bugles (because they are fun). My stomach hurts.. I've eaten so, so much...

The Japanese forum is having a little give-away to celebrate 100 members. I offered to donate Japanese snacks as prizes and picked up an assortment last night, to give the other staff an idea of what I can get hold of.

http://i872.photobucket.com/albums/ab290/jembru/92559c36-2336-4e90-ad6f-d72ecb52850f_zpsdf96d9a1.jpg (http://s872.photobucket.com/user/jembru/media/92559c36-2336-4e90-ad6f-d72ecb52850f_zpsdf96d9a1.jpg.html)

So far I have eaten the red bean pancake, some whistle candy, a couple of marshmallows and a strawberry mocchi. That's AFTER I had my egg and soldiers for breakfast! It's only 10am and I have an onigiri in the fridge that is just begging me to peal off it's delicate wrapper.. encase it in the fresh, crisp nori and enjoy it's sweet, sweet filling...

... I HAVE to start working out more often now I'm not going to study so much anymore!

Seriously, he doesn't like the dino shaped nuggets? I LOVE those things! Add some mac and cheese, and maybe some tots, and what else do ya need?

Oooh, you're all making my tummy rumbly.

Has anyone tried Konnyaku noodles? I found them a few weeks ago in a healthfood store. Konnyaku is apparently an East Asian plant and used in udon, but that's not how I learnt about it. A packet of these 'noodles' has just 8 calories in and seems to be low in just about everything (or at least the brand I'm getting, which is branding itself as a super diet food). I expected it to be horrible, but couldn't resist trying it out. They stink. I mean really smell vile, but when you wash off the liquid they're packed in, and add them to your favourite soup, they're actually really nice. I wouldn't say they taste of much, but it's not different to eating any other noodle soup type product!

Oh and yeah, I'm just about to make some now! ^^

I'll tell you what I'm NOT eating.. mango. I bought 3 nice large ones that were reduced in the supermarket. It wasn't until I started trying to carve one up for my packed lunch, that I remembered why I don't usually buy mangos. They're impossible to carve. By the time I'd removed the skin and scraped what I could from the stone, I maybe had less than a satsuma sized portion. It wasn't worth bringing to work, so I just ate it there and then.

My friend's Thanksgiving feast: grilled turkey (seriously, this was so juicy and tender that to put gravy on top was SACRILEGE), homemade mashed potatoes, green bean casserole, homemade stuffing (made with $0.45 Jimmy John's day-old bread -- best idea ever), crock-pot ham with brown sugar and orange juice, and some delicious wine, mimosas, and tequila shots! <3

To those in USA, I understand that the premise of Thanksgiving is a giant lie and that all we did was torment and slaughter then entire tribe of Native Americans who originally helped the colony of ignorant pilgrims. I get that. I am not ignorantly glorifying this awful fact, nor am I ignoring it. However, with the people that I hold the closest, they already know this fact and use Thanksgiving as a tool of gratitude and generosity, which I think is worth celebrating. I hope you all hug someone you love today. <3

Slice into the skin in four places, top to bottom, then peel the skin off, and slice the fruit from the seed. I've found that to be easiest, but mangoes are always messy.

After peeling, I cut them down to the seed vertically and then horizontally, and then cut them away from the seed...most directions have you do it the other way.

I use the pulpy part by the seed in facials, with some oatmeal, yogurt and honey (like this). (http://nuannaarpoq.wordpress.com/2012/05/21/feed-your-face/)

As much as it's supposed to be a joke, the three main food groups here are beef, pork and chicken.

People raise sheep & goats here, and also Bison (Buffalo), so it can be bought, just not at the regular stores, I guess you have to travel a bit. I sometimes find bison steaks & burgers. Those, I never saw in NJ. I like it better than beef! Guess it's just one of those regional things. I buy my salmon online now....all good.

As much as it's supposed to be a joke, the three main food groups here are beef, pork and chicken.

That's part of the reason I'm vegetarian, because (esp. in Aust, and I imagine in similar circumstances in the US) people just eat WAAY too much meat.

Here most common are lamb, beef, chicken, then pork. A bit of venison I think. Horse is now legal in SA, but no-one buys/sells it (culture *sigh*). Kangaroo is also gaining favour. And there are more and more of the specialty butchers selling game meats, or natives, named things like 'Wild Oz', that sell goat, rabbit, roo, crocodile, camel etc.

Personally I prefer the game/native meats. They aren't farmed and mass produced the same way. I'm a big fan of people eating roo, as it is never farmed (no chances of any thing foreign, eg steroids, no selective breeding), there are strict rules on how they can be killed (shot to the head. If you miss you can't get paid), whether they can be bought to the butcher (if you don't get a head shot, time between death and arrival etc), what to do if you shoot a nursing mother (I think you get paid less, and you need to dispose of the joey humanely) and a multitude of other things. Plus where I live, it's all local. Roo's are killed around the area, and butchered 100km away.

More people should eat roo.

Rowanwood
02 Jan 2014, 21:04
More people should eat roo.

We eat mostly game critters; venison, elk and fishes, but I would totally eat a kangaroo...if I had any way to actually get some. I have a funny feeling I couldn't even order it here and if I could, it would be $50 a pound or something.

But I'd eat it.

It would make me hoppy.

You could always visit! I'll serve it up :P

Other problem with roo, is a lot of people say they don't like it, cos it's too 'gamey' or 'tough'. But that's because so many people will only eat their meat well done, and roo goes chewy past medium rare.

Very punny. On my other forum, a bloke used 'turtally'. As in 'turtally awesome'. Can you guess the focus of this forum? :P

When you hit up a taco truck in the middle of the night parked in a closed gas station those are pretty much your yummy choices. Tacos de tripas, tacos de cabeza, tacos de lingua, tacos asada. It's all chopped up and spicy with toppings. Can't really tell one from the other. Tripe is what we put in menudo. It's like chewing rubber. As a kid I ate it. But not any more. Can't do the head either. I would see the whole entire goat head in the pot. No thanks. Tongue is just like shredded beef. Only way more tender.

Dead animal heads make me feel sick.

Just an FYI for those in the States: as much as I detest Wal-Mart, they do occasionally have bison. And most places anymore have a large enough Hispanic population to have a carniceria, where you can generally get mutton or goat. Many Asian markets will have more 'exotic' choices of meat, too, particularly seafood.

But no one sells Skippy! haha I think you people are missing out.

I've just made three pizzas. One cheese, one margarita, and one pesto veg... mmmmmmm

Walmart's bison and lamb here is so terribly over priced. As well as their ox tails. :S As a meat eater I am very happy to be in the Midwest since we have such a nice butcher I can just visit for these things. The only time they disappointed was when I missed alligator and decided to try out their frozen section. I will never eat frozen alligator again. But Walmart is the place I go to for the most decent crawfish so far from the coast.
