View Full Version : Another Possible Infection - Grrr.....

30 Apr 2011, 16:03
So last week my knee on my right leg began to hurt badly. I ignored it. I smacked it into something on accident so I thought it was from that. I developed a small knot and the area turned pink. Several days have gone by and instead of getting better, it is getting worse. It has become a brighter pink, bigger, and reminds me of a blood blister that isn't fully developed. It now looks a lot like the spot I got on my ankle over a year ago that was a blood blister and was from my bone infection. I showed it to my mom, who used to be a nurse, and she said it looked like an infection under my scar tissue and not just from bumping it into something. I've already had a bone infection in my ankle which we got rid of, but now it seems I might have one in my knee on the same leg. Not a fun idea. I'm freaking out. If it is a bone infection it means I have to reface the idea of an amputation if it isn't treated easily....and if it is a bone infection it also means it lasted through my antibiotics from last year's bone infection - which isn't a good sign.

Please pray for me! I'm scared. I got a doctor appointment for the 10th to find out what is wrong if it doesn't go away on its own by then.

Thanks Celest!

We are pretty sure it is a sign of a bone infection. It's got all the same signs and symptoms that I got last time with my ankle. It has also gotten worse since I posted about it. Think I may be making my doctor appointment for a sooner date.

Tried to get a sooner appointment, but was told I couldn't get in any closer. They are booked up and they told me one week wasn't gonna make too much of a difference if I've possibly had if for a long while. Last time I had a surgery opening, or any opening around my knee, was back in September when they did a bone graph below it. *Sigh* So the wait continues. I've been doing Reiki treatments on it when laying down, and it is the only thing that helps on the pain and swelling the spot is creating. Or maybe its not the Reiki, but you guys. ;) Thanks for all the good vibes, lit candles, and prayers. Don't know what I'd do with out my PF buddies.

Well, I went to the doctor today. He didn't know what it was. He said it could be an infection, but doubted it was a bone infection. However, that is exactly what they said last time. He tried to do a culture on the blister, but couldn't really get anything out of it as the blister part had gone down some. I'm not sure if he sent off what he got or not as he said he didn't get much of a sample. I'll let you guys know if they did and what the results come back as if he did. Anyways he referred me to a knee specialist since my knee has been hurting. So for now we got no idea, but the doctor doesn't think I have one. *sighs*

Thought I'd update this. Just found out yesterday that it is a bone infection. I have two choices if my MRI shows no extra damage. 1) Live with the infection my whole life always taking daily antibiotics. 2) Have the infected bone removed and get a knee replacement. All with strong IV antibiotics.

Problems: Living with an infection for life could mean possible spreading of it and eating away of the bone if it becomes resistant to the antibiotics. Also knee replacements last only 10 to 20 years. I'm tired of surgeries and no sure how much my leg can take. My ankle is already fused together. I'm not sure I can do it.

Right now, I'm seriously considering having my leg amputated above the knee so I never have another surgery or infection. I'm just so tired of it all. I just want to be able to walk and live without worry.

Oh, my gosh, that's terrible. I'm so sorry. I can't really offer anything that will help, but I hope the best possible solution comes through for you.

Oh wow...I feel like I don't have much to say in response to that, but you'll be in my thoughts here.

Thanks. Everyone I know is at a loss for words. I've been dealing with leg problems for a little over 4 years now. (In fact, I think my first post ever on PF was a prayer request back in 2008.) I've dealt with bone infection in my ankle which literally ate away my entire ankle joint. That is the reason for the ankle fusion they did once that infection was cleared up. I've had over 7 surgeries to my leg now. Every time I got better - something else went wrong. Its been one heck of an ordeal and health battle for me. I'm just about ready to give up on the leg. At least with a prosthetic leg, I would be able to run and walk normally again.

So...just keep me in mind and in your prayers. I'll keep everyone posted.
