    Kidney Surgery

Fri Sep 20th, I'll go in at 10:50 am CDT for a partial nephrectomy (for those that speak English, the surgeon will be removing about the bottom half of my right kidney, because it contains a mass). I'll update when I can.

      Quick update:

Went in for a partial, but tumor was too entangled around too much of the kidney, so entire kidney taken.

Spent 5 days in ICU, never had much pain. Incision ridiculously small. Day 3, I think, I was diagnosed with a deep vein thrombosis (clot) in leg, put on heparin drip. Lots of nausea, no appetite. Remaining kidney function optimal. Heart function optimal.

Spent 5 days in regular hospital room. Still virtually no pain. Day 7 (total) got first shower... mmm. Day 8 blood sugar crashed, apparently just from body struggling to adjust to, well, everything. Looks like I'll be hypoglycemic for a while, at minimum. Switched to a pill-form blood thinner. Finally showed enough blood sugar stability to get released Day 10. Kidney functional optimal, heart function optimal.

Very bruised, very tired, basically OK.

P.S. This started as a 5 year check-up for colon cancer surgery...

As checkups go, that's a disturbed twist. Good to hear you're out and the surgery went...

Not badly, I guess. It's hard for me to call, "So, the tumor is entangled, we're taking your kidney..." good.

        So, not badly.
Life itself was a lightsaber in his hands; even in the face of treachery and death and hopes gone cold, he burned like a candle in the darkness. Like a star shining in the black eternity of space.

"But those men who know anything at all about the Light also know that there is a fierceness to its power, like the bare sword of the law, or the white burning of the sun." Suddenly his voice sounded to Will very strong, and very Welsh. "At the very heart, that is. Other things, like humanity, and mercy, and charity, that most good men hold more precious than all else, they do not come first for the Light. Oh, sometimes they are there; often, indeed. But in the very long run the concern of you people is with the absolute good, ahead of all else..."

Good luck, my dad has been dealing with thrombosis in his left leg for years and now his right one is also clotting up.

          Stay strong.
