Jainism

I was wondering if anyone knew anything about Jainism. Why is it called that? I hear they are vegetarians, or vegans and are actually very careful when it comes to farming so they don't damage the plant. I also hear they are refrained from violence and are totally pacifist but there have been Jains in the military. Was it around before or after Buddhism? Is the afterlife the same as the one in Buddhism? Are there any Jains in this forum?

As far as I know, there are none here, as an internet forum probably wouldn't fit with their beliefs as possessions, including computers, would be frowned upon.
