I'd say simply do what you feel is right to do with it. If you want to attach a leather thong to the end, put on a red cape, spin your hammer around, and pretend you can fly, go for it. Or stir your coffee with it, or ... you get the idea. I've found that the gods care more for the fact that you are willing to go out of your way to simply send a prayer up to them and to do them honor, rather then how you go about doing it.
