    Re: Aftermath..Question:Could you really survive.

I guess I fall into a different camp. I wouldn't be living in the wilderness. I'd be living on a farm with goats, chickens, ducks and a vegetable garden. We'd end up having to do things quite a bit different with no electricity and only feed grown on the land there. But the excess animals would quickly get turned into meat and we'd keep a manageable herd for the land. Water is the biggest issue. We've got a great well...with an electric pump. We are working on solar power but don't have it installed yet. We actually do have an oil well on the property with the level so high you can just dip a can in it. We've put it straight into a diesel engine and it runs fine. So maybe we should just invest in a diesel generator! That oil well would last us forever...wonder how long the generator would last!

I can hunt, fish & forage. I can shoot a gun or bow at least in the general direction of food or threats. I can live without electricity and hot water, but I'm not happy about it. Right now our heater has frozen up & I'm terribly annoyed. So for me the question isn't really can I survive, but would I given the choice?

I'd probably opt out. Convenience & comfort are what I live for, not pitting myself against the elements.

If it comes to surviving, they would probably put me on an ice flow, and set me adrift with no paddle.

    I think.

If you want to survive in the wild, I recommend that you come here - every thing you'd want, thousands of acres of trees, wildlife so abundant we have to hire people to keep it under control (everybody around here who drives has bagged at least one deer while bumper hunting).

The only bad thing is that the soil is crap. And it gets chilly in the winter.

Other than that, I'll be dining on walleye, venison, and 'coon, while you-all are scrounging for food in cat food cans...
Yes I think so, survive that is. I can hunt and fish as well as find my way in the woods. I grew up camping (not in an RV) in a tent and know how to make shelters as many other necessary outdoor skill sets.

We had a power outage here in October for 24 hours, and in some areas it lasted 7 days..It was hard for me even though it was only 24 hours. It does remind one of just how dependent we are on our electricity.

lol speak for yourself! I'll be dining on wild boar and rabbit! Maybe even some venison as well.

plus we have a decent climate and soil for growing veggies, and I know how. and an abundance of berries, tree fruit, nettles (when boiled they taste like spinach), mushrooms and other wild plants.

Depends. I'm super sensitive to chemicals and stuff so I don't think I'd survive THAT kind of fallout.

I can survive in wilderness though, easy. Well, not easy I guess, but probably better than most people. I can forage and identify plants (I'm a bit better with ones on the West Coast of Canada but I know enough here to survive. I can build shelter and a fire and know how to protect against dampness. I own a few fur coats for the winter (which, despite what people say, is the only thing that will keep you really warm at -15 Celsius when you're 110 lbs unless you're doing some sort of vigorous sport). I know how to trap animals.

We're actually in a really good place here. While the big rivers and lakes aren't drinkable, the city is totally surrounded by running water. We have an abundance of plant life and fruit trees planted years back. We have an overpopulation of rabbits and wild boar. I think a lot of European cities are actually ideal, because most were built up before modern life happened and are situated in order to get water, have protection, grow and forage food, near good hunting areas, etc. Despite the modern age most of them still maintain a lot of their advantages. Berlin would even have good access to farmed food without modern stuff. Some of the farmlands around here still use traditional methods, especially around spreewald, where they're all naturally irrigated with canals and such.

I'm not sure. I would propably die in a year.
I can't say anything because I haven't been ain a situation like that.
It could be hard but I belive there's a lot of peopple who would survive.

No, I probably wouldn't survive. And zombies aside, I'm not sure I'd want to. I've read too much post-apocalyptic fiction. Taliesyn might be able to keep us going for a while, though.

Right now? Maybe, but only because I have family in the area that is infinitely more adaptable than I am.
