My school just blocked one of the Paganism sites I use as a resource to learn things, and I'm super angry. I don't think the site had anything bad on it, but it had a huge calendar on it that I use to help track holidays and such! I'm surprised they haven't blocked this one yet, but dang I use that site a lot. I wish my school was more open minded, but it's also a Catholic Private school so I don't know what I was expecting. :=(:

Re: My School Blocked a Pagan Resource Site and I'm Salty
I worked for a school system in Virginia for a few years and things were blocked based on keywords. So it might be because it was religious or it could be because the site in question simply had certain keywords on it. I recall one site I had to access that was blocked because "Ponce" was phonetically similar to another word. Keywords are constantly being modified as well as phonetic listings.I'm Only Responsible For What I Say Not For What Or How You Understand!

I can't access any religious websites at work, and I'm convinced that's a fairly normal thing.

B. Your employer coughs up a couple tens of thousands of dollars to get the key (which may or may not exist and if it doesn't then see plan A)
For a variety of reasons (some better than others), least privilege is frequently not applied to web browsing. When it isn't, I'm sort of meh on whether religious sites should be blocked. I don't normally see a need to block them over other sites* but I also don't really care.
*Technically, I'm fibbing. There was a period of time where religious sites were a major vector for malware. I found thia moderately amusing at the time because I expected porn sites to be the major malware vector and they had apparentl been steadily improving their security on that front. Anyway, depending on if religious sites are still a dominant malware vector then blocking them on the grounds of network security makes sense. I challenge anyone to find me a company that specifically said, "religious sites are major carriers of malware, we are blocking them to protect our network" and then actually proceeded to filter all (or almost all) religious sites as a legit means to protect their network. That would be deeply amusing.Life itself was a lightsaber in his hands; even in the face of treachery and death and hopes gone cold, he burned like a candle in the darkness. "But those men who know anything at all about the Light also know that there is a fierceness to its power, like the bare sword of the law, or the white burning of the sun." Suddenly his voice sounded to Will very strong, and very Welsh. "At the very heart, that is. Other things, like humanity, and mercy, and charity, that most good men hold more precious than all else, they do not come first for the Light. Oh, sometimes they are there; often, indeed. But in the very long run the concern of you people is with the absolute good, ahead of all else..."

Generaly, the test is "do they bock ALL religeous sites?"
If yes, then OK.
If no, then it is a violation of the first amendment.
