Freya Aswynn and Edred Thorsson
are my two favorite authors of rune lore
I consider them a must have

Rick you know it is not nice to list out of print books like that I have tried for a long time to get my hands on TEUTONIC MAGIC by Kveldulf Gundarsson

Hehehe... sorry...

If it's any consolation, I keep hearing that new editions of both Teutonic Magic & Teutonic Religion are in the works (but I've heard it for, like, 5 years now)

Speaking of out of print books, I pre-ordered Aswynn's PRINCIPLES OF RUNES for around $15(US) when it came out. Less than a year later, I gave my copy to a friend as a Yule gift, figuring I'd just order another one. Lo & behold, it was already out of print, & used ones started at $50(US)! I don't regret giving the gift, but DAY-YUM!  shocked

For any interested in Gundarsson's two out-of-print works... I can direct you to an honest dealer who would likely be able to find them for you, though the price would likely be exorbiant (in the $40-50 range).  Both are excellent and very informative reads...

Based on prices I've seen elsewhere, $40-$50 sounds pretty reasonable...

I also like Diana Paxson's Taking up the Runes

It has meditations on each of the runes, going 2 at a time. They're designed for groups but I just read them and visualized what I read in my mind. Gives you some really interesting perspectives and newfound knowledge of the runes.

I just picked up a used copy of Ralph Blum's The Book of Runes.  It looks good (although mostly divinatory) to me, but I'm very, very new to runes.  Any thoughts/advice/cautions?

Yes, but this is a family forum, so I'll say this...

"The most recent rune revival began in the late 1950’s in Germany, but didn’t really arrive in the U.S. until the early 1980’s when Ralph Blum published his first book. Although many people view Blum’s work as more modern ‘pop’ culture than historical research, he still deserves credit for jump-starting the current popularity of the use of runes as a divination tool."

-from RUNE CHARMS:PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS OF RUNE MAGIC Volume I by Rick R. Wilson

Blum used I Ching to "divine" the meanings of the runes. Sorta like eatin' at a Chinese buffet to find out what Mexican food tastes like...

...bottom line, Blum doesn't have much credibility regarding his academic accumen...

Right then.  Thanks!  At least it was cheap... anything useful about it beyond its role in the popularity of runes?

The answer would be no. While he has the basic meanings o.k. he changes the order of the runes and adds a blank rune. Common sense tells us it is impossible to carve a blank rune onto anything. Like Rick I am trying to be family orientated. Wink

Go with Edred Thorsson his books run an average of ten dollars. Really good for the beginner. Also try Rick's book, while I have not seen it I understand it to be not bad, plus he is knowledgeable in the runes.

Since the subject has been brought up, I'll offer my take as to exactly why the so-called "blank rune" has no validity. Each runic symbol is a visual representation of a sound (this is a basic principle of galdr, rune magic; when one performs galdr, one "sings" the runes). The "blank rune" visually represents nothing, ergo it represents no sound. If it doesn’t represent a sound (as does every rune stave in every Futhark), then it doesn’t convey runic energy, and therefore doesn’t connect to the Well of Wyrd or the Runic Stream.

I have heard the blank rune described as "Odins Rune" ... Any opinion on this?

Odin's rune would be more apt to be Ansuz, while it is not the only rune that has a connection to Odin it has the strongest connection.
