Two things:  Do the runes have to be carved in wood, or would drawing them on little sliped of paper work?  Two, how do you predict with the runes?  Like, what's the procedure? (Odinist style, if style makes a difference).

Runes should be carved in wood. Drawing them on little slips of paper works, too.

Two, how do you predict with the runes?  Like, what's the procedure? (Odinist style, if style makes a difference).

To predict with the runes, get a good rune book, or go to a good rune website, & go to it...

I've really never thought about it, but I reckon that Odinistas use pretty much the same style as everyone else.

Material really doesn't make much of a difference.  I've made, and used with equal success, runes from wood, metal (my current set), paper, clay, stone, glass, plastic, and will be soon using bone.

Like, what's the procedure?

There's probably as many different styles of casting them as there are runecasters.  I personally use a method that I've not met anyone else use.  Like Rick said, get a good book of ten from the list he linked, read through, then pretty much figure out how they relate to you.  We do have a rune by rune discussion going here:  http://www.paganforum.com/index.php/topic,20705.0.html

I personally don't "make" my runes. I walk through local creeks and search for a certain size and shape of smooth river rocks to use. I love them! I always choose small, flat, round ones.

So those of you who have or have had multiple sets of runes. What do you do with the set you no longer use.

Do you just stick them in a box on the shelf? I can see myself in several years wanting to make a new set of runes and I would not be able to get rid of the set I have now. I've only had them for a month or two and already I am very fond of them. How could I or you or someone, store the runes we no longer use but still make it obvious that they are dear to us?

Secondly, after I made my runes I had a few that I messed up on. Since they were made of wood I burned them, because it felt wrong to just throw them away and I was afraid that if they weren't destroyed they'd become imbued with negative energy or something. For those of you who've made your own sets, as well, what did you do with the ones you messed up on (unless of course you did them all perfectly Wink ) Fire doesn't do much to glass, bone, or stones.

I'm actually hoping to eventually make a set out of seashells.... though not sure what to keep them in so that they won't break.

Long time no see! Haven't been here in over  a year, so doubt anybody remembers me :-P

I package them up and send them to a friend.  When someone shows interest in reading the Runes, I try to help in any way possible.

My very first set was from a woman I met through Mystic Wicks.  She taught me the basics of casting Runes and then sent me a set to call my own.

When I moved from Indiana, I passed that set down to a dear friend of mine who always loved the set.  They went to a great home!

Wow, I never thought of that! That's a good idea, that way they aren't just sitting on a shelf in a box collecting dust, or being destroyed. They still get used. I love that!!! Cheesy

*nods*  That they do!  I'd rather see them used by someone else rather than my pulling them out once in a blue moon.

There are times when I miss that set, but I know that they are being taken care of nicely and that makes me happy.

Traditionally they are made from wood, but you can get stone one's if you like in specialised shops or workshops.

But i guess in the meantime you can make the runes out of slips of card Smiley
I'm sure they will work the same. they might get damaged though that way and you could tell which one's were which if say it had a bend in it or something.

I haven't got my own rune set but i just use the runic symbols to aid me through ritual or to wear to give me luck or something Smiley.

One of my favorite sets to use are from Sodalite.  The other favorite set are from Bone.

Wood runes are wonderful too, I just haven't walked the forest yet.

funny thing about bone: it's not a really pricey material. We throw a lot of it away. It's just that not a lot of people work with it.

yeah i guess so Smiley,

i guess 30 is reasonable and probably quite good to work with.

I just thought it might be expensive because to get the bone in the right size, to be cut cleanly might be more expensive to make from by the factory/modeler guy's point of view.
but i guess they ain't that bad Smiley
