    Your Welsh warrior name

While poking around in a Welsh site Tylluan posted elsewhere, I found a Welsh warrior name generator.

Just type in your name, and push the button, and you are suddenly a Welsh warrior.

I am now the fearsome Brychan Caradog.

(just to be sure this wasn't a Welsh prank, I also tried typing in Shit Head to make sure they weren't the same. The great warrior Shit Head would be Selyf Hyfaidd)

    What's Your Welsh Warrior Name?
Every moment of a life is a horrible tragedy, a slapstick comedy, dark nihilism, golden illumination, or nothing at all; depending on how we write the story we tell ourselves.

Mine is Gruffydd ap Llywarch Fawr. What does it mean? My full name is Gleb Olkhovsky, the Welsh name doesn't seem to be connected. Maybe the 'G' in the beginning has something to do with it.

While I do not consider myself A Welsh warrior my name would be, "Dafydd Frych". Can anyone tell me how that is pronounced?

...this is a bit awkward. My name is too obscure for the generator.

I clicked it again and actually managed to get one that actually IS the Welsh version of my surname. Funny. I won't share my surname here though :P

Looks like Mrs. P has the job of translating the name meanings ... If she doesn't mind that is ... Iestyn Idwallon ... Second time I did it, it came up Iago ap Idwallon ... hmmmmmm
I won't be wronged. I won't be insulted. I won't be laid a-hand on. I don't do these things to other people, and I require the same from them ... John Bernard Books

Indian Chief 'Two Eagles' was asked by a white government official; "You have observed the white man for 90 years. You've seen his wars and his technological advances. You've seen his progress, and the damage he's done."

                      The Chief nodded in agreement.

The official continued; "Considering all these events, in your opinion, where did the white man go wrong?"

The Chief stared at the government official for over a minute and then calmly replied.. "When white man find land, Indians running it, no taxes, no debt, plenty buffalo, plenty beaver, clean water. Women did all the work, Medicine Man free. Indian man spend all day hunting and fishing; all night having sex."

Then the chief leaned back and smiled; "Only white man dumb enough to think he could improve system like that."

                        Re: Your Welsh warrior name

The ap part is child of. It works rather like 'son' on the end of an English surname. BUT... it has also worked its way into how we spell surnames nowadays. So ap Owen became Bowen. Ap Rhys became Preece and so on. There are lots when you look.

For Danie Marie, the first part of her welsh name is nothing to do with a warrior but the name of the Welsh female saint that we regard as the Welsh version of St Valentine (Dwynwen)

Blodeuwedd is the flower woman from the Maginogion. 'ap Gruffydd Fach' is child of Little Griffith.

So... what you have here his not something that can often be translated. It's Name child of Name mostly! But fun!

                          Re: Your Welsh warrior name

I got Rhiain ap Maredudd Fawr.

Which is funny, because I was always told that 'Rhonda' is a Welsh word (though it's spelled Rhondda).

                            Re: Your Welsh warrior name

I live in The Rhondda, Rae'ya. And the nearest pronounciation for Maredudd is Mar-ed-ith. The Welsh pronounciation (at least where I live) would emphasise the 'r' it's slightly rolled with an 'h' sound behind it.
