    Presence of an animal

*I literally just signed up for this forum, I don't know if this is where I would post this but I needed to talk about it*

I love animals, and a lot of my practice involves being connected with animals. They are how I connect with the world around me.

Anyways, This is the first time this has ever happened to me and I'm just wondering if someone knows what this means.

I arrived to a hotel last night and as soon as I got here I could feel the presence of a kitten. It was a STRONG presence. I'm not sure why, but as I looked around and took the place in I just knew there was a kitten at this place and I knew I was going to end up finding it. Later on last night, probably 5-6 hours later, I finally saw the little guy. Probably around 2 months old, just running through the bushes alone.

First I felt relieved, I never felt a presence of a live animal like this before, so I thought it was just crap at first. But when I finally saw him I was just so excited. I didn't try to follow him(It feels like a masculine presence, but could be female just the same) because I didn't want to scare him. But after I came inside and went to bed, my boyfriend said he saw him again but that he was wild and was very afraid of humans. He's a tiny little guy, so I'm expecting his family to be here somewhere as well. So maybe that's why it felt so strong.

So what does this mean? I've never felt like this before so should i try to befriend the little guy? Anybody have similar experiences with just KNOWING that an animal was near before you ever saw it? I love that this happened, I'm super excited to be able to feel when there is life near me.. But why was this kitten so present to me? what should I do?

Sorry if this seems weird, I'm fairly unpracticed, and I'm still learning a lot.

    Re: Presence of an animal

First and foremost, unless you're going to be sticking around for a loooong time, I'd not suggest any sort of attempt to befriend the kitten. You mentioned you were at a hotel, which is why I say this. It's not fair to either you or the little guy (gal) to start to form a bond and then to have to abandon it once you have to move on. Also, at two months or so, that's around the time that the kits, especially feral ones, are ready and willing to leave the mother and start to wander off on their own. Or, mom decides for them and goes her separate way. It's possible that the siblings may still stick together for a while, sort of forming their own little "colony".

Now, if you are willing to take the steps to ensure that the kitten will be staying with you, even when you leave to go back to wherever you live, that's a bit different. He's at the age where he can go either way, semi-domesticated (I say this because cats do much better on their own than other domesticated critters) or feral, depending upon how events unfold in his life.

Now, on an esoteric (sp?) level, my first thought is to Freya, as cats are one of her animals. Lessons in compassion can come from the finding and nurturing of little things. Or, maybe you could use a new friend. Just my thoughts.

    Re: Presence of an animal

I'm only here for a few days, and that is definitely one of the reasons I was hesitant about trying to befriend him. I think I'm just going to watch for another day or so. If I see other kittens, or a mother, I think I'll leave it be. If I don't, I'll give the little guy the chance to show himself to me and if he'll approach me, I would definitely take this baby home with me if he seems comfortable.. I'm just curious as to why his presence was just so blatant to me. Maybe he'll approach me on his own, but I'm definitely gonna give him some time. Thanks (:

Update: I just met the little guy! He must have known i was talking about him. I went out for a cigarette and he came walking from behind a row of bushes. We sat and watched each other for a few minutes and he looked pretty interested and fairly calm. As I got up to walk inside i got about 5 ft from him before he went to hide. He's gorgeous, still no idea if he's got family around.

If you can take him(Not flying, that can be hard because of airlines rules) and you are driving where you can use a travel box for him. Also if you can take care of him(lot of work with a young kitten) I personally have gotten cats in this way,as you say they "Came" to you. My favorite animal is the cat..

Yup were driving and it would be no problem finding him a carrier to get home. I've got a cat at home, he's fully grown now, who I'm worried about though. They may not like each other, so taking him could cause a problem. I got my baby this same way almost. He was a stray around 6 months when I found him, He approached the car I was sitting in and when I called to him he jumped right in the window. He was near a friends house who knowingly did not have neighbors with cats, he was dirty and malnourished. He's happy and healthy at home now, with my boyfriends brothers cat to keep him company. Just not sure how he would react, but as I said before, If this little one comes up to me willingly, my fur baby at home might have to make some arrangements!

The younger the cat, the easier it is for the existing animal to deal with it. That way, they can take the time to set ground rules and the like.

Funny thing,I had a cat,and I also got a baby Miniature Dachshund(wire haired) and the Cat mothered it to the point they were inseparable, and slept curled up with each other. When the dog died, the Cat went into a funk for over a month.

My Gretle looked a bit like this pic.

I love dachshunds! I've always wanted one (: I've also got a puppy, a boxer/lab and his name is rocky. He's about 5 months old right now. He's used to the cats, he just chases them for fun, but they normally beat him up before he can touch them so I know he won't be a problem lol

I would be hesitant about bringing a feral into an established household ... if you had no animals then i would say do it ... but there are different mindsets between feral and "tamed" ... That being said , if you choose to take him be careful and patient ...
I won't be wronged. I won't be insulted. I won't be laid a-hand on. I don't do these things to other people, and I require the same from them ... John Bernard Books

Indian Chief 'Two Eagles' was asked by a white government official; "You have observed the white man for 90 years. You've seen his wars and his technological advances. You've seen his progress, and the damage he's done."

    The Chief nodded in agreement.

The official continued; "Considering all these events, in your opinion, where did the white man go wrong?"

The Chief stared at the government official for over a minute and then calmly replied.. "When white man find land, Indians running it, no taxes, no debt, plenty buffalo, plenty beaver, clean water. Women did all the work, Medicine Man free. Indian man spend all day hunting and fishing; all night having sex."

Then the chief leaned back and smiled; "Only white man dumb enough to think he could improve system like that."

If you want to take him home and know that you can care for him, then do so. If you don't intend to take him home, then leave him be and do a little ritual to a deity who cares for animals to help keep him safe. Don't humanise him further if he's going to stay a feral/stray.

If he truly is around 8 weeks old, he's still in his peak socialisation period, though he'll be coming out of the optimum human-socialisation stage in the next few weeks. Exploration socialisation is at it's peak around 8-10weeks, so it's a good time to place them in a new home and he should adjust quite well if you can give him lots of positive and calm attention. If he's truly from feral stock vs stray stock (there are actual genetic differences) then be aware that he may retain some feral instints - it might be harder to keep in indoors, he may have a higher hunting drive and he'll needs lots of mental stimulation and toys/activities that mimic natural behaviours. Having said that, the fact that you have seen him indicates that he's likely to be less on the feral side and more on the tameable side. You should not be seeing lone feral 8week old kittens around a hotel during the day... he's either on his own, or he's more humanised than the others, which is a good sign for a potential adoptee.

As far as your other cat goes... adult cats treat kittens differently than other adult cats. It will be stressful for him, but with some strategies in place it's do-able. If you adult cat already has experience cohabitating with another adult cat and hasn't shown any signs of obvious stress, then he's likely to accept the kitten after a few weeks. There are some very important things for you to do to smooth the whole process though. We've recently had a discussion about introducing kittens to adults here in the Pets Chit-Chat thread.

As to whether there's any spiritual significance... that's hard to say. I do believe that sometimes things happen for a reason, and that sometimes pets will find you rather than you finding them. Maybe this is a case of that. Or maybe there's a completely mundane explanation and you could smell that there were cats around or something. Sometimes we pick up on physical cues without realising it. Sometimes we actually are sensing the energy presence. We may never have an answer. But if you feel that you have a connection with this kitten and you have the means to care for him, there's no reason not to.

Just make sure that you quarantine him from your cat at home until you get him vet checked, vaccinated, de-wormed and de-flead. And don't go straight from patting him to patting your own cat without washing your hands and maybe changing your shirt while he's in quarantine. He WILL have fleas and worms, he may have ringworm, and he may have FIV or FeLV. Get him vet checked ASAP.

Also, as a general note. This is not actually true. Kittens will stay with the family social unit until sexual maturity, and sometimes females will actually stay with mum longer (related female cats will co-rear kittens in a family colony situation). Depending on resource availability and concentration, feral cats will sometimes not leave the vicinity of their mother at all and will form colonies. At 8 weeks they are still learning valuable social skills from mum and wont voluntarily leave mum. But exploration skills start to take the forefront and they will start to explore away from mum a bit... which is why it's a common age for feral or stray kittens to be found, and to get stuck in trees and drains and behind walls.
