For at the crap that folks give the French military, they have the most number of successful enterprises throughout history.

France is one of a handful of global powers with true expeditionary capability left. It's among the worst nations to irritate enough to get it's military involved. There's an unwarranted tendency to lowball their abilities in the US but

      a. Significant percentages of the US population fail epically at both history and geo-politics.
      b. The US population has a tendency to not understand how absurdedly over-powered we keep our military.

That said, Thal has direct experience with French troops and dislikes them. I'm curious. I do have an idea of how dangerous the French military can be. I don't have recent knowledge of their behaviour on an individual and small unit scale.
life itself was a lightsaber in his hands; even in the face of treachery and death and hopes gone cold, he burned like a candle in the darkness. Like a star shining in the black eternity of space.

      Yoda: Dark Rendezvous

"But those men who know anything at all about the Light also know that there is a fierceness to its power, like the bare sword of the law, or the white burning of the sun." Suddenly his voice sounded to Will very strong, and very Welsh. "At the very heart, that is. Other things, like humanity, and mercy, and charity, that most good men hold more precious than all else, they do not come first for the Light. Oh, sometimes they are there; often, indeed. But in the very long run the concern of you people is with the absolute good, ahead of all else..."

John Rowlands, The Grey King by Susan Cooper

"You come from the Lord Adam and the Lady Eve", said Aslan. "And that is both honour enough to erect the head of the poorest beggar, and shame enough to bow the shoulders of the greatest emperor on earth; be content."

Aslan, Prince Caspian by CS Lewis

The French reputation for a sissy military comes from the quick surrender to Germany during WWII. Amongst many reasons for that surrender, though, is that France was in the middle of upgrading their small arms, and there was a weapon shortage and ginormous logistics problem in distributing amunition for several different rifles.

Russia had the same problem - chronic weapon shortage - but they sent troops into the field armed with pointy sticks and old percussion rifles...

The US manufactured weapons for Great Briton, and sent them (under the radar because of official US isolationist policies) on the lend/lease program.

We had to kick them off our ship--literally, we pulled into port and dropped them off 3 weeks early. Our female sailors had to be escorted at night (on watch or working) if they needed to go anywhere because they thought we were fair game. The last few days they were on board, they were confined to quarters after hours. Their officers were all white, and their enlisted were all minorities. They had no discipline and were a bunch of sexist pigs. For 4 weeks, it was the worst underway experience I've ever had (and these were just exercises). I mean, I've had some harassing experiences from fellow sailors and Marines...but they didn't hold a candle to this. And it was pervasive--it wasn't one or two bad apples. It was, you can't walk past the chow line without using your elbows.

The Brits, with their arms factories being constantly bombed, created the Sten Gun, a machine gun that could be easily and rapidly be built in any metal shop:

Re: A happy reunion with an Asatruar

I had a few run-ins with the French military in Bosnia back in the mid 90s. They were more of a pain in the ass than any of the former Yugoslavian militaries. I was assigned to the French sector, essentially reporting to the French commander, but they would screw with my team (US, Brits, and Germans) constantly.

Just curious - were these French Regulars or Legionaries?
I've heard from my friends that the few legionaries they met were far better than the French Regulars - both in training and discipline, and overall just nicer to be around
Wondering if this is just the case of a couple of professionals or if the French Foreign Legion is a cut above their regulars

in my case? I'm fairly certain they were Troupes de Marine, but I'm not sure which units

They were definitely regulars. I always had good experiences with Foreign Legion.
