What is your opinion on editing human DNA?

Scientists from around the world are convening in DC to discuss editing human DNA (sauce) for 3 days...we are pretty much at the point where its not a matter of if, but of when, why, and how much...

Good idea? Bad idea? A bit of both?

    What should the limits be?
“You have never answered but you did not need to. If I stand at the ocean I can hear you with your thousand voices. Sometimes you shout, hilarious laughter that taunts all questions. Other nights you are silent as death, a mirror in which the stars show themselves. Then I think you want to tell me something, but you never do. Of course I know I have written letters to no-one. But what if I find a trident tomorrow?" ~~Letters to Poseidon, Cees Nooteboom

“We still carry this primal relationship to the Earth within our consciousness, even if we have long forgotten it. It is a primal recognition of the wonder, beauty, and divine nature of the Earth. It is a felt reverence for all that exists. Once we bring this foundational quality into our consciousness, we will be able to respond to our present man-made crisis from a place of balance, in which our actions will be grounded in an attitude of respect for all of life. This is the nature of real sustainability.”

"We are the offspring of history, and must establish our own paths in this most diverse and interesting of conceivable universes--one indifferent to our suffering, and therefore offering us maximal freedom to thrive, or to fail, in our own chosen way."
~~Stephen Jay Gould, Wonderful Life: The Burgess Shale and the Nature of History

"Humans are not rational creatures. Now, logic and rationality are very helpful tools, but there’s also a place for embracing our subjectivity and thinking symbolically. Sometimes what our so-called higher thinking can’t or won’t see, our older, more primitive intuition will." John Beckett

People don't have a very good reputation at genetic modification in the long term effects and they know so little about what the future may hold. There could be some short term benefits but what happens when they make a mistake? Who takes responsibility?

I think it's a bad idea, since there will always be people who will try to make a profit out of such things or misuse it, f.e. to create superhumans to control others or something like that (Unless that superhuman is going to be Captain America, then I'm totally ok with it :P).

But they are going to do this anyway. So if they do I really hope they will exclusively use it to help people, such as preventing certain diseases or disorders, like intellectual disabilities.

Depends on the purpose. Are we trying to eliminate genetic defects? By all means, let's try for a healthier future.
“You must be shapeless, formless, like water. When you pour water in a cup, it becomes the cup. When you pour water in a bottle, it becomes the bottle. When you pour water in a teapot, it becomes the teapot. Water can drip and it can crash. Become like water my friend.” -- Bruce Lee

On one hand, I totally agree with this. Not only does it lessen suffering, it also (in the long run) is cheaper than treating some of these conditions over a lifespan.

On the other hand, some of those genetic issues exist for a reason--sickle cell anemia, G6PD deficiency, even cystic fibrosis gene exist for a reason--they are evolutionary adaptations for specific populations that conferred an advantage for people in those population (carriers of the gene), from malaria resistance (sickle cell and G6PD deficiency) to typhoid resistance (cystic fibrosis gene carriers).

Look at hemochromatosis, for example: http://www.theatlantic.com/health/ar...lls-us/266936/

I think when this is done, it needs to be done very carefully...but that is something I am still pondering.

Huge bucket of worms... We STILL argue over abortion! I still don't understand why they don't make it OK for under two months and be done with it and get on with other MORE important subjects, like steroids in Baseball, LOL. I saw today China bragging they already have the technology to clone humans... Like China needs help with population problems! I agree with two other posts about they are going to do it anyway and it would be great to correct defects, but how are they going to sterilize the experiment is a BIG question. Reminds me of Alien 3(?) with the clone of Ripley and the alien... We can have super wealthy people wanting neon glowing octopus gene kids, or better yet they can blend into the background in an instant. I've noticed recently that in the 21st century, people aren't required to take blood tests to see if they are incompatible to have kids like they use to for marriage licenses. People flip out over mascara on fuzzy bunnies. I think they should do it somehow to cure problems, like they do with particle accelerators looking for the God particle even though I cringe that they will try just one experiment too far and all matter will turn to energy and somewhere in the galaxy some aliens will go "oooh! look another super nova, I wonder what sparks those?"

It can't be stopped. With the magic CRISPR (which always makes me think of a toaster) it isn't even expensive.

It will be out of the hands of the well financed, and on the streets soon.

    My ultimate opinion is:

This is gonna be interesting... I wonder what's gonna happen?
Those who have suffered understand suffering and therefore extend their hand.

I can't do everything, but I can do something.

First thing you know is a Penis enlargement spam ad...of course followed by some super Viagra(Wonder why that reminds me of Virgina?)

Might start with humans getting a real heart and stop killing each other.
