Increase in Scarlet Fever cases in US and Great Britain

Was wondering if anyone else has noticed the increase in Scarlet Fever cases lately? While most of the news I've seen is coming out of England there are reports showing up in parts of the US as well.

As to why I really do not know. A few reports said its a cyclic outbreak and occurs every so often. Of course there are the "Refugee" theorist who say the increase is due to the influx of refugee's into the outbreak areas.

One thing is for certain it seems it's enough of an increase in cases that it's making various news feeds, the CDC is reporting on it and I presume that the AMA and other's are telling US doctor's to be on the watch out for it.

That it's caused by the same bacteria that can cause strep throat seems to suggest it can be fairly easy to pass.

A problem seldom mentioned is climate change...as average temps get higher, the ranges of things change, take the Zika virus,as the temps change the mosquito's migrate into what was a colder climate. So now we are seeing it here in the US.

I don't know if there is any documented evidence on this, but it seems it might need to be studied.

I doubt it's because of refugees if it's mostly happening in the UK and the US. Both countries have relatively low numbers of refugees. It's not happening in Germany, and we have WAY more refugees (individual cities have taken in more than the entire US).

I read this about a person going to Hawaii and had dengue fever, bitten by a mosquito that then was infected by Dengue fever(It was never in Hawaii before)

          Story here.

As far as scarlet Fever,I do not know about how it is spread(Perhaps Thal has some input)

I've known a few children in Texas to get SF over the last 10 years or so. There isn't a vaccine for scarlet fever because its part of strep.

Can't say if it is or is not occurring in other parts of Europe. The news feeds I was reading mostly focused upon Britain and the US as the main story. Have to admit since they are in English it's easier to read them than those written in other languages. Not better, just I don't read German, Dutch, French, etc and just scrape by a little with Spanish.

I just meant that I lived in Germany and I looked for news on it, and didn't find any. I'm fluent in German

The best I could find is that the daughter of one of the major political party leaders got it in early Feb and he took some time off to spend time with her.

Scarlet fever cannot be vaccinated against, but can other tropical diseases?

I agree, it's unlikely to be caused by refugees. They make up something like 0.19% of the population.

No, I think it more likely to be carriers visiting from parts of the world where Scarlet Fever is prevalent, but they themselves either carry it with no symptoms, or just hadn't developed symptoms by the time they got on the plane.

So, rather than refugees, I think it more likely to be migrants (of all sorts, economic as well as successful asylum seekers) and visitors.

The only person I've ever known to have Scarlet Fever is my niece, and she lives (with my brother and his wife, her parents) in Leicester. Make of that what you will.

One of my daughters had it a few years back although usually it affects children. There is currently a bit of an outbreak in the South Wales Valleys.

Poor hygiene, not covering mouth when sneezing or coughing, not washing hands and sharing towels etc all help to spread it.

Granted, I don't know much about the illness, but since it's caused by the same bacteria as strep and since it has existed in our part of the world for quite some time, I'd imagine that it's something already floating around. I doubt it has much to do with immigrants, migrants, or any other group of people coming into the US or the UK. I'd wager that outbreaks just happen from time to time, much like the flu seems to spread more in some years. All it takes is one kid in a daycare to get it, and a bunch of others get it as well.
