Trepanning. The procedure where you drill a small hole into your skull (not your brain) to bring back a 'normal' equilibrium to your body. It's said to increase energy and higher consciousness due to increased blood flow. It's been around since before your gods were born (that's old!)
It's NOT to remove demons (as was the popular view of the black ages). It's been used in many cultures at various times in our history.

My skull already has holes in it designed to allow air intake, food and water intake, sound intake and to fit eyeballs in. Exempting a surgeon needing direct access to my brain or to relieve pressure that is an imminent threat to my health, my skull doesn't need any more holes than it already has. Weird theories have their time and place but not when they involve poking new holes in my head.

I'd avoid unnecessary surgery. But I'm not a big fan of bod mod, anyway...
Every moment of a life is a horrible tragedy, a slapstick comedy, dark nihilism, golden illumination, or nothing at all; depending on how we write the story we tell ourselves.
It's still done occasionally to deal with hematoma following skull injury. Greek medical texts suggest it was also done unnecessarily in an attempt to cure things like epilepsy; luckily the mortality rate was very low. I was astonished to read about crackpots who trepan themselves - ouch!
I suspect a number of politicians have holes in their head. Probably the result of an anal transplant...
