Re: US nuclear force still uses floppy disks

This is the first portable (not laptop - just "portable") computer I worked with:

    snap10-1.jpg

Tiny screen. I worked in the graphic arts, and my boss made me create a 20 x 15 inch chart on that tiny screen, may he rot in hell.

I remember people where I worked, in the graphics department using Macs for magazine graphics stuff. Shaklee, the company put out a Mag for distributors. That was the BIG mail process we did every month, like 80-90 thousand pieces. That counted toward a LOT of our OT.

I remember real "cut and paste", pre-computer, when the art dep't. would literally cut out logos, etc. and paste them onto paper for the first "proof" of an ad. I'll go saddle up my t-rex now.

I don't know what to do with you guys! Haha!!

My ex hooked up my reel-to-reel tape recorder to our phone line once and it actually worked & recorded conversations. It was hidden in the basement and I never actually saw the operation. Isn't that like what they did at Watergate? They didn't have much else at that time, and I guess the old school stuff gets the job done.

LOL The electronics/computer thing was his own biz. The paranoia came from the "other popular 1980's pursuits" previously mentioned. Hey that reminds me, Scarface is on tomorrow - haven't seen it in a while.

Oh yeah - I can't believe they re-made Roots - I'm gonna watch it! The original came out when I was in college, and i remember a friend having to watch it for her Social Work class. We found out it was on day after day after day and were calling the later episodes Stems, Leaves, Flowers, Trees, etc. This new one is only 4 episodes.

I've never seen it. As a "meta-reader" (one who likes to analyze the "how" in the expression of ideas - English major vice ) I'd be interested in contrasting/comparing the older and current versions.

I have that same English major vice and will definitely be comparing/contrasting the two!

I'm late here, but my boyfriend was super miffed that people are so appalled by this. He's a programmer and works for a research institution, and his take on it is that it's more secure than an upgraded system. Even if the system were offline, it could still potentially be hackable, and the ability to hack something like that is a scary, scary thing. Requiring floppies to actually do anything keeps it really secure, ESPECIALLY because they're super obsolete.
