Today is 50 years since Aberfan. Outside the UK you may not have heard of it, but I post the link here:
Nobody in Wales has ever forgotten what they were doing when they heard the news. It was an entirely preventable and foreseeable disaster. Villagers had been warning the authorities about the tip. Nobody listened. And as a result, 116 children in a tiny village died - crushed, mangled, suffocated and drowned. In all, there were 144 fatalities. It wiped out almost a whole generation.
People rallied around, raised a huge amount of money for the victims and their families. Do you know what the government of the time (allegedly socialist at that) did? They took money from the fund to pay for clearing up the bloody, deadly mess.
It was thirty years before another, allegedly socialist government gave the money back. Without the interest.
Greed before people. And it's still here.
