Dude was an incredible leader to Cuba. He essentially made the country self-sustainable in the face of the American blockade. He removed Batista, freed his country from American influence(ask the rest of Latin America how that struggle has gone for them), and then survived about a trillion CIA assassination attempts. Healthcare is free. Education is free. There are some shortages but what can you do when you've been blockaded for 60 years? Not that he was perfect or above criticism but given the condition of Cuba and the blockade, without him, Cuba would have crumbled.

My BFF is a Cuban Jew. His parents came to the USA from Cuba after losing their successful men's shirt factory in Havana due to Castro's takeover. They became teachers and did well, but many who suffered similar fates didn't have any assets left to back themselves up with, and didn't fare so well.
I was 5 during the Cuban Missile Crisis and used to look for Castro under my bed every night. I was terrified of him.
