    Microsoft at war

So Microsoft is playing games with Russian hackers. I think this is one of the more hillarious stunts that I've ever seen.

Microsoft is going after Fancy Bear, the Russian hacking group that targeted the DNC, by wresting control of domain names controlled by the foreign spies.

"But those men who know anything at all about the Light also know that there is a fierceness to its power, like the bare sword of the law, or the white burning of the sun." Suddenly his voice sounded to Will very strong, and very Welsh. "At the very heart, that is. Other things, like humanity, and mercy, and charity, that most good men hold more precious than all else, they do not come first for the Light. Oh, sometimes they are there; often, indeed. But in the very long run the concern of you people is with the absolute good, ahead of all else..."

    That was fun to read.

My professor has us reading about hacking rings and backalley goings-on; I sincerely hope I have to write an essay about this

I read this on reddit the other day. Very interesting read. I want to followup and see what Fancy Bear does because of this.

I got a kick out of the fact that Microsoft found a way to go on offense. You don't normally hear about companies hunting hackers. That's normally more of a law enforcement thing.

Not the first time a company went after a hacker, this story is kind of interesting.

              Story here.

              A quote:

Author Clifford Stoll, PhD, an astronomer by training, managed computers at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in California. One day in 1986 his supervisor, Dave Cleveland, asked him to resolve a US$0.75 accounting error in the computer usage accounts. Stoll traced the error to an unauthorized user who had apparently used 9 seconds of computer time and not paid for it. Stoll eventually realized that the unauthorized user was a hacker who had acquired Superuser access to the LBNL system by exploiting a vulnerability in the movemail function of the original GNU Emacs.

The name Kevin Mitnick might ring a bell. After he was caught Kevin had an online movement that used the phrase,"Free Kevin" that went on for quite a while.
