Meditation + strong intention and determination.

This will not exactly "purge unwanted thoughts", although it can; many people find unwanted thoughts reoccurring, in which case you will need to deal with them further by examining the nature of thought and the reason that thoughts occur.

it is at times called the groundhog effect,in that your thoughts are in a repeating loop. Not uncommon in depression, also dwelling on things to much. The exit from depression is not feeding the loop. positive reinforcement of your self worth and self image.

I did go through therapy for major depression once. find a way to distance your thoughts away from YOU,externalize. At times it is NOT about US,engage the world deeply.

                        Learn to Love Everyone

Spiritual practices are designed to awaken us out of separateness into connection with all things, with Spirit, God, the One. Ram Dass provides us with a range of loving resources and methods that take us out of our separateness into our awareness or oneness. well I am not a hateful person I do tend to love most everybody,
also I wonder if there is some artifacts from my childhood,I was raised
as Christian until I was about 10 ( I am 63 now ) so wonder if something from the past
                          is been surfacing

From one POV (specifically Taoist but also accepted in Buddhism and Hinduism) thoughts are a manifestation of the inner winds (so, specific inner energy). But the mind is very deep. As you note, something may be bubbling up from childhood or maybe it's something more recent.

I used to have curse words appear in my mind when walking past some people. These were all childhood wounds. Once I recognized and accepted that I could deal with it.

But you'll have to find out what is happening with you.

The question I would ask is: Why so much thought about a simple object?

I'm actually curious about why you invest so much of your mental wealth in thinking about wearing a cross.
Every moment of a life is a horrible tragedy, a slapstick comedy, dark nihilism, golden illumination, or nothing at all; depending on how we write the story we tell ourselves.
