Does anyone have good resources/ideas/thoughts on rune casting and/or making? I really want to make my own rune rods out of birch or willow. I am having a difficult time finding good sources describing how I should make them and if I should do a ritual before they are used. Any thoughts are appreciated. Thanks!

Re: Making/Casting Runes
Well, me and atler (if he haven't changed his name) once crafted rune symbols in small white stones. it was long work but it was fun. With our mostly 'primitive tools' (random metal objects strong enough to make ribbels in the stone) and a lil manpower, we crafted... i think 27 runes. Doing it in wood would be cool tou, but i dun know where i would find that...Please, just call me Ghost

Re: Making/Casting Runes
The only resource I have is on paper, I could type it up and post it? I've been meaning to do that anyways :P I found it VERY useful Better than no resources The only resource I have is on rune casting, cleansing, and their meanings and suchlike, it could make a good comparison to any you already have"Otwarty świat; rany zamknięte."

My friend said it would be kind of interesting to carve off a part of the bark exposing the inner part of the wood and burn the symbols on using like a soldering iron. I just might give that a try...sigpic

Re: Making/Casting Runes
Hmmm ... Slicing the wood into rune pieces is debateable ... Some say power tools are ok ... Others go with just using hand saws ...
Bark on? ... Bark off? ...
Electric woodburning? ... I am more partial to using a small magnifying glass out in the sun ... Not a big fan of electrical things when it comes to magic ...
You can say a little prayer for each one while you are imparting the design to the piece ...
Other than that .... Not much ... Except that I would suggest the best wood would be some that was deadfall ... Not live ... Also not really partial to store bought wood ... But that is just me ...I won't be wronged. I won't be insulted. I won't be laid a-hand on. I don't do these things to other people, and I require the same from them ... John Bernard Books
Indian Chief 'Two Eagles' was asked by a white government official; "You have observed the white man for 90 years. You've seen his wars and his technological advances. You've seen his progress, and the damage he's done."
The Chief nodded in agreement.
The official continued; "Considering all these events, in your opinion, where did the white man go wrong?"
The Chief stared at the government official for over a minute and then calmly replied.. "When white man find land, Indians running it, no taxes, no debt, plenty buffalo, plenty beaver, clean water. Women did all the work, Medicine Man free. Indian man spend all day hunting and fishing; all night having sex."
Then the chief leaned back and smiled; "Only white man dumb enough to think he could improve system like that."

Re: Making/Casting Runes
I have the same feelings as magus here.
before I bought my wooden runes, I considered making them, I still am actually.
I had planned on finding a nice downed branch, with the bark still on it. then sawing the runes from the branch with a standard old fashioned hand saw, then, I wanted to carve the runes into the wood with a stone or knife.
next I wanted to make a pigmented dye from a dark plant, brush it on the rune face so that it seeps into the runes better.
then rub them with linseed oil and let them dry.
I considered using fire to also carve the runes, but I wasn't sure exactly how to go about it without an iron.

Re: Making/Casting Runes
I've used everything from sculpey, wood, glass, and shell with everything from paint pens, woodburning, and a dremel for both "traditional" runes and non-traditiona "runes" (casting objects? whatever you want to call 'em) with no adverse effects.
Really, it depends on what level of historical authenticity you are going for...if you aren't concerned with that, then the best place to figure out what will work for you is within.Wonderful Life: The Burgess Shale and the Nature of HistoryPagan Devotionals, because the wind and the rain is our Bible

Re: Making/Casting Runes
Just a note about personalizing them ... I read once where the maker/user saved a mixture of sterile water and accidental blood (collected when they got a paper cut, etc ... ) and used that to infuse their spirit to the runes ... If you are a female and not too squeamish you might use fresh menstrual blood ... I have heard that is fairly potent spiritually ...I won't be wronged. I won't be insulted. I won't be laid a-hand on. I hope you get everything working to your satisfaction ... J/K about the prego part ...
Runes can be a blast to make ... But you can buy a set too ... Up to you ... Was thinking about making some out of PMC ...
