How did you choose a god?

In an effort to drum up some conversation I thought I'd posit this age old topic. If you do, what god or gods do you follow? What process went into that choice? What do you do to worship them and how do you feel about it? Basically, what's the story there?

I really didn't choose a god. My god chose me. I found Lord Anubis at a point in time when I was still afraid of the dark and wanted to overcome that fear. So I researched deities that could help me and it seemed like I had a connection. That night I decided to stop using night lights I was really scared and suddenly felt his spirit envelop me. That's when I knew that he had chosen me.

I never have good things to say here because I don't specifically pledge to a divinity and I don't have any desire to explain what I do instead.

In a reality where I actually pledge to a specific Power, Heimdall tends to catch my interest. I'm rather fond of the gatekeeper/guardian archetype and Heimdall does his job faithfully and with vastly less grandstanding than a lot of deities that I've come across stories of over the years.

I'm also fond of what I've read about Ahura Mazda so that's a thought too.
life itself was a lightsaber in his hands; even in the face of treachery and death and hopes gone cold, he burned like a candle in the darkness. Like a star shining in the black eternity of space.

      Yoda: Dark Rendezvous

"But those men who know anything at all about the Light also know that there is a fierceness to its power, like the bare sword of the law, or the white burning of the sun." Suddenly his voice sounded to Will very strong, and very Welsh. "At the very heart, that is. Other things, like humanity, and mercy, and charity, that most good men hold more precious than all else, they do not come first for the Light. Oh, sometimes they are there; often, indeed. But in the very long run the concern of you people is with the absolute good, ahead of all else..."

John Rowlands, The Grey King by Susan Cooper

"You come from the Lord Adam and the Lady Eve", said Aslan. "And that is both honour enough to erect the head of the poorest beggar, and shame enough to bow the shoulders of the greatest emperor on earth; be content."

Aslan, Prince Caspian by CS Lewis

Primarily Frej, though I don't really actively worship, it's just kind of a fluid thing. I think at a time when I really needed it I turned to him and he just always feels like comfort and strength. There are some aspects of him that just vibe with my own personality. Others in that pantheon occasionally. I guess I never felt like there was a need perform worship. I'll occasionally pour a cup of something for them. But there's no demand on devotion.
Day to day i don't really work with gods, I work with smaller concepts like nature, and the ideas of the folklore around here.

As a polytheist, I follow many gods. To the point though I revere Diana-Hecate foremost, and to a lesser extent her brother Helios-Apollo. Sorcery was the original thing that brought me into paganism, the practice of magic, and theological questions followed later. Diana, as the queen of witches and goddess of magic, was a natural fit as tutor. While I only formally began to pray and give offerings to her after reading the Gospel of the Witches, as I found it moving, I had honored the light and dark previously. I've also suspected that when I previously prayed to Night and implored the more nebulous spirit of magic, that it was she which listened.

I became convinced fully when I went hiking and I'd had in my mind that I needed a staff as a project to show my progress in learning magic. I asked Diana to guide me to a suitable branch. A breeze came up around me and I understood it like a language without words. The breeze guided me for about ten minutes until I came upon a break in the tree canopy. Growing up from a crosswise crack in the stone of the mountain was a dead sapling, bleached white, and standing in a beam of sunlight. It broke cleanly in my hand at a natural weak point, nearly exactly my height.

Since I have honored her and I feel her presence when I call. I feel challenged to grow and achieving my desires are a cooperative effort. More than once I consider a problem and then a spell will form half complete in my mind. I honor her with music, libations, offerings at crossroads, and prayers each time I put on my jewelry. I also believe that the act of witchcraft and creating spells is itself devotional. I'm especially enthralled with Diana as a historic entity, being historically identified with Hecate and possessing an evolving identity that has remarkable staying power.

There are many aspects of Diana which I find sympathetic and resonant. My lady strengthens me, and more she guides me toward things that I myself can improve using my own ability. My obsession with research is vindicated in her collection of knowledge. My impression is that of a guide and teacher- protecting and assisting, but also cultivating my independence and personal abilities.

Light a lamp and wait for the bugs to show up.

If you find a useful one, eat it.
Every moment of a life is a horrible tragedy, a slapstick comedy, dark nihilism, golden illumination, or nothing at all; depending on how we write the story we tell ourselves.
