    Solstice 2012 / Galactic Alignment

Anyone got anything special planned for December 21, 2012? In case anyone doesn't know, the sun will be alignment with the edge of the dark part of the Milky Way when it rises, which only occurs every 26,000 years or so. I was watching a 2012 show on the History Channel and it made me think of it.

I actually put in a vacation request off for that day at the beginning of January. My wife is terrified of Doomsday scenarios; so I, like a good husband, put in a request off so I could be there to hold her hand when the world ends (it won't).
There once was a man who said though,
It seems that I know that I know,
    What I'd like to see,
Is the I that knows me,
When I know that I know that I know.

Personally, I'll be breaking out the popcorn and hoping none of my neighbors freak themselves out too badly.

I might ask for the day off (if the world does end, I'd rather not be at work), but so far, I don't have any plans.

What will this look like, visually?

        I can't quite picture what I'd see.

And do you know if there is a particular area/range thing were it will be most visible?

lol! I've nothing planned but it is something I am vaguely interested in. I just think it is funny how literally people take the 'end of the world' stuff. Whether you believe it has anything to do with the 2012 predictions or not, one can't deny that society as we currently know it cannot continue unchanged. The world's climate is going to change whatever action we do or don't take and this will undoubtedly have a knock on affect on how we live our lives as a race. The current global financial crisis is just a stark reminder of how finite modern society is and that it will eventually be forced to change. The word here is EVENTUALLY. I doubt we'll see this 'new world' in our lifetime, but I like to think December 21st, 2012 is a kind of midpoint in this transition. A bit like celebrating a solstice because it's gonna start slowly getting lighter or darker! I'll probably do something special on this night but I don't know what yet. I WILL however, go and request this day off right now (I'm at work)!

These are totally just my own thoughts on the matter. It at least helps me to stay calm when I read my bank statement.

Oh as a fun aside... have you ever heard that thing about the sign of the devil being 666? Apparently in Hebrew this looks a bit like 'www' so some people are saying it is the Internet that will bring down society/cause the change between this 'world' and the next. I have absolutely NO idea about Christian stuff though and can't read Hebrew.
夕方に急なにわか雨は「夕立」と呼ばれるなら、なぜ朝ににわか雨は「朝立ち」と呼ばれないの? ^^If a sudden rain shower in the evening is referred to as an 'evening stand', then why isn't a shower in the morning called 'morning stand'?

I think I'm going to dress in victorian fashion and pretend I'm confused...Normally I would partake on December 8th, but the 21st seems like it would "fit" more, ya know?

I will most likely be working, which is dependent on my days off during our winter shift-bid. Considering that it's on a Friday, yeah, I'll be working. Whoopee.

This is what it's supposed to look like:

When the Sun rises, it should be in the narrow black band that is the center of the Milky Way.

I'll probably cook a dinner with friends, like I do every other solstice.

I'll probably have a chuckle when the apocalypse is supposed to happen, sort of like I did on Y2K.

Oh, very cool. I'm glad people tell me these things, or I'd sleep right through them.

                    Now to plan something appropriate...

In my town, everyone will be freaking out. A few people I know have requested vacation time for it. My mom says she is going to stock up on food supplies before hand because when something like this hits our town everyone runs to Walmart last minute buying everything they may need in case of an emergency. I will most likely be at my parent's celebrating the possible end of the world. If nothing happens, well...oh well.

I'm not sure what I'm going to do on that day. Being an archaeologist (mostly), I'm already starting to get a little frazzled with all the doomsday people. One of my professors this semester is actually a Mayan specialist, and I think she's already cracked, because she's being very perky and cheerful about the whole thing. People will be that much more unsuspecting when she digs somebody's eyeballs out with a spork in a couple of months.

So, I need to figure out a suitably epic thing to do to everyone that day. Some kind of practical joke for the ages.

lol! You make your town sound like South Park! Which makes me wonder if they'll do an episode about this 2012 stuff.

During every possible hurricane that might hit East Texas, my town goes into a panic even though we live far enough away from the ocean that all we get is a thunderstorm. Each time our Wal-Mart looks like the end of the world is coming with people stocking up on supplies. Only hurricane that ever damaged my town was Rita and that was because when it hit us it was a Cat 1...and we live about 4 hours away from the ocean. Was told it was a first time record for my town. However, even for that "the end is coming" events that happened not too long ago, our Wal-Mart was low in canned goods and water. I just sat there like, "Really? Really People?" Though I don't think it is as bad as South Park, well not always. lol. And yeah, I bet they will do an episode over it. I'm sure every show will have to have a 2012 episode. How could they not?

I thought itd be hilarious if they were to put out previews for some epicly awesome movie to come out the day after the solstice. then never release it. saying "well we didnt think anyone would still be here to watch it"
