    Make-up! and all things beauty!

I watch a lot of youtube tutorials on make-up products and applications. Apparently some of you do the same thing. I thought this could be a great place to talk all things beauty. Such as:

    ~product reviews/questions/complaints
~make-up tricks and tips and questions
    ~hair stuff
    ~styles
~maybe even post make up try out pics.

For me I'll start with an oldy but goody. I gave you guys the tip with the lemon and sugar scrub. I don't know if some of you were around for the primer tip.

Face primer: It's what you put on after your moisturizer and before your foundation or powder. It does a few things. It goes over your skin and smooths it all out. This works well for those with larger pores (I have larger ones just around my nose). It helps your foundation 'glide' over and not sink into wrinkles etc. It also keeps your make-up on all day! Now the active ingredient that's in all primers is called Dimethicone. And you can spend a pretty penny on them. Monistat Chafing Gel is only $6.99 with the SAME exact ingredient. No, it's not for yeast issues. It's like what you put on a baby's bottom to keep from chafing.

    All the info you need!

Oh! So...I make oatmeal and I make a bit extra to mix with honey, a bit of avocado (if I have some left over in the fridge), a dash of grapeseed oil and watermelon pulp (the kids love watermelon juice frozen into pops, plus watermelon juice is a lovely toner for sunburned faces) and use it as a mask. It tastes funny, but my skin feels like baby butt afterwards.

      Ooo...yay!

I'm going to have to try that primer tip, Medusa. I have a lot of trouble with developing acne and plugs in my pores. Part of it is medical(acne tied to PCOS-new news for me) but part of it seems to be a PH thing too. I noticed when I started trying an apple cider vinegar rinse on my hair...the big benefit seems to be adjusting ph due to hard water. Same goes for my face. Adjusting back to a slightly acidic ph prevents soap buildup, which leads to clogged pores.

Does anyone know where to find one of those concealer compacts with different colors these days? They seem to have fallen out of style, but they work really, really well for me.

Physicians Formula makes them, if you can't find them in a drugstore, look online Dez.

So I thought maybe we could try one of the beauty DIY treatments and report back with results! I picked something we can all use on all skin types AND that is relatively cheap (only 2 ingredients!)
It's a rice flour and honey mask for all skin types. Rice flour is an ingredient you find in higher end beauty products. I know The Body Shop sells rice flour powder for over $30! I'm going to pick up some rice flour at my local Asian shop and I can pick up honey at the 99 cents store. Who's up for trying and reviewing with me?

Re: Make-up! and all things beauty!

Thanks for starting this thread Medusa! I was going to start something similar based off the discussions on the 'what do you look like thread', but then I got busy and haven't been online for a few days.

I have some rice flour (might be out of date though) so I'll give the mask a go. I also have a facemask from Avon that has riceflour in and that is AMAZING. I suffer from oily skin and enlarged pores, but this mask really smooths my skin. Most masks hurt my skin (it is very sensitive), but this one doesn't at all.

I have two skin primers. One from Avon and one is a tinted 'pore filler' from clinique. They do make a difference but I have to use so many layers of gunk on my skin, that they just seem an inconvenient extra step and the effects don't last long.

My problem is that I have to wear such a high SPF (50+) and these are always really heavy. I stopped wearing moisturiser through the day but that hasn't made much difference. After putting on the sun lotion, my skin is sticky to the touch and my foundation goes streaky. My powder goes into clumps and my blusher won't blend well so I end up looking like a clown.

It helps that I work nights. I can go to work without sun lotion and just put it on in the morning if the sun is out (I jog home and it only takes around 6 minutes: I live very close to work so can get away with not putting it on unless it is really bright). But it is my days off that cause problems. I like to go out and have adventures on my days off. I often meet my Japanese friends in Newcastle because we live quite far apart and it's a mid-point for all of us. I walk there when I can to save money because the bus costs quite a lot. It is 8 miles and takes about an hour and 30 minutes, so I HAVE to wear the lotion. Basically have to look like crap when I socialise and only get to look my best at work, or on nights out. Most people love hot sunny days, but they just make me depressed and want to stay indoors.

If anyone has any hints, PLEASE HELP!!

Hold on: That brand of nappy rash cream doesn't exist here (to my knowledge at least), but I just had the idea of looking at the barrier cream one of our residents uses. I'm quite sure it is available over the counter and contains 22% dimethicone. I'll get some of that and see if it is better than my purpose made primers. Will of course, report back with the results!

Re: Make-up! and all things beauty!

              Have you tried these tips:
Let the spf lotion set for two minutes to dry up a tad before adding make up.
Add thin layer of primer. And you have to wait 2 minutes to let that dry up as well (I usually move to my hair for a minute and wait the time out doing something else)
Use a foundation but try using a fat fluffy kabuki brush. It works like a stippling brush. You lightly dab the kabuki brush in the foundation (if it's liquid you should be putting only a few drops on the back of your clean hand) and apply to the face. In a soft circular motion begin to buff the foundation in with the brush. It will keep you from over applying. Always start at the apples and center of face with foundation. then work your way out lightly. Doing the light continual buffing motion with the brush actually helps even out the foundation over pores. I have larger ones right at the cheek next to my nose. And I have red cheeks! I don't apply any to the forehead since I don't need it. I don't like to feel as if I have a pound of make up since I sweat. Then seal it all in with a light mineral powder brushing. If you are having to put layer upon layer of products on, you aren't using the right products for you. I have some great videos I could link you for foundation techniques. In fact I'll post one we all can use!

Also if you take a look at my pic in the picture thread, I have a full face of foundation and powder. But it just looks like I have nothing on. Without anything I have a lot of small brown moles and sun spots from age and too much loving of the sun as a kid! I try very hard to make it look as if I just have a smooth skin. I might do a before and after so you can see the mess I'm working with!

Re: Make-up! and all things beauty!

Jembru, I use a 30 SPF moisturizer and a 30 SPF face powder, depending on what I am doing (or how often it might need to be reapplied). There is really no point to using anything above a 30, which blocks 97% of UVB (SPF blocks 93%)--the FDA doesn't even recognize anything over 50 SPF, which only blocks 98%. And really, the most important part of sunscreen is proper application and reapplication. The latest research says to put it on 15-30 minutes before you go out, 15-30 min after you are out and at least every 2 hours after, and immediately after swimming, sweating, wiping off, etc. And of course, there is no effective way to measure UVA...

I have vitaligo...so I have *no* natural sun protection in those areas of my body at all, and I'm fine with a 30 SPF when I'm out doors provided I put it on before I go out, and about every hour after...and I don't have a problem. Hence the reason I have a 30 SPF moisturizer and a powder (and I carry baby wipes so I can clean and reapply), and I just don't really wear regular make up, and when I do, I have a 30 SPF foundation.

Re: Make-up! and all things beauty!

@Medusa: Thanks. I'll give that a try. Maybe I do try to do everything a little too quickly. I apply my foundation with a brush, but I am not sure what a kabuki brush looks like. On the picture on your link, my brush looks like the firts one on the left. It is also from clinique and I have a horrible feeling it could be animal hair. I tried cutting a bit off and burning it, but the results were inconclusive.

@Thalassa: There is really THAT small a difference between factor 30 and 50? I thought it was something to do with how long you can stay in the sun before the protection begins to fade. I've no idea why I think this or where I heard it though. The highest SPF I have seen in a makeup is 25 and although I have no doubt I'll find higher if I look more closely/pay more, I am quite limited because of how pale I need my makeup. I have mentioned somewhere else, but a few brands, like Clinique, Clarins, no.7, don't go light enough and I look like a reject from Jersey Shore even in their lightest shades. I'll see what I can find though, because there is no way I am re-applying my makeup every hour just to top up my sun lotion! Unfortunately, my current powder offers no protection and my mineral powder is, as usual, too dark.

Eurgh.. I wouldn't even mind if my skin was the nice porcelain type, but it's just a kind of translucient undead type. sigh.

I use this one, which is tinted....but this one is "translucent". And I also use Aveeno's 30 spf moisturizer. I've also used Neutrogena's facial sunblock, but I don't like it on my face that well--so now I use it on my hands.

Re: Make-up! and all things beauty!

Ok. I did a preliminary before and after pic spread while I was at work. I like to put on a light look since it's hot and I don't want to feel I'm weighed down by tons of make-up. Though I do use a full range of products, I'm very light with the application. It's subtle. Like I said the afters are meant to look as if I really don't have a lot of make-up.

So here's my mug sanz make-up! (I did clickable thumbnails to save your fingers from scrolling) Click each pic twice to get full view.

Full face before: red blotchy spots, sun spots, large pores by nose.

Eyebrows before: I have stopped plucking my eyebrows. They are just shaped this way and are sparse on hair growth now. You can also see some of the brown sun spots around my upper cheek.

Sunspots before. You can see the bottom side of my face I have a patch of sun spots. I also have some red broken capillaries. They are hard to see because this is bad lighting and a cell phone camera. But they are there!

Lips before. I have a birth mark on my lip. It's actually the lip pigmentation is just my normal skin color on one side. As if someone took their finger and erased my lip color.

                      So now the after.

                      Products used:
Olay complete moisterizer UV skin shield and SPF 15 for normal skin
Monistat Chafing Gel as my primer
Cover Girl Cream to Powder foundation in Classic Ivory
Cover Girl Tru Blends mineral loose powder in translucent light
Wet n Wild Concealer stick in light
Wet n Wild Black eyeliner for eyebrows
                      E.L.F. black cream eye liner
                      E.L.F. Black mascara
Wet n Wild blush in Pearlescent Rose
Wet n Wild lip pencil in Willow 712
E.L.F. matte fat lip pencil in neutral
                      E.L.F. lipgloss in Watermelon

Seems like a lot. I use all drugstore cosmetics. I get discount make-up. But get good products in moisturizer and foundation. That's where you really need to spend good money. It takes me a casual 30 minutes to put my face on.

                      So here are the afters:

full face after: You can still see some of my sunspots through the make up. I don't mind this since it ends up looking like normal 'un made up' skin. So people never think I'm actually wearing stuff. Which is better then that line around your face showing your mask! You will also notice my lips. They look as if they just have some lip gloss on them. You can't see my lack of pigment.

                      Sunspots after

                      I have eyebrows!

I hope this helps some gals who want to keep a natural look but still look put together.

Re: Make-up! and all things beauty!

Hey thanks for showing us. I can really see the difference (btw, you're so lucky to have naturally shaped eyebrows. Mine are all over the place and have no symmetry. I've started over plucking and just drawing them back in so they actually match).

I have been meaning to catch up with this thread but kept forgetting. I tried the tip about letting my suncream set before I apply the next layers and as it seemed to help, I've started using the skin perfecter again. I'm actually pretty impressed with the results.

On Thursday, I walked to Newcastle again to meet my friend, Miyo. I did my makeup before I set off, but had it in my bag, because I always get changed in a department store's toilets when I get there, and touch up my makeup.

Well, not only was it an 8 mile walk, but it also rained (that light drizzly kind that feels like you're walking through a very lost cloud) the whole time. I was running almost 30 minutes late by the time I got to Newcastle, so just had time to change my shoes before meeting my friend. I thought I'd at least chuck on some powder so I didn't look to terrible (my friend is absolutely STUNNING and always has perfect hair, manicured nails and pristine clothes, so one does feel pressure to scub up when meeting her). Amazingly, when I opened the mirror to check the damage, my makeup was all still in place! In fact, all the rain had done was add a nice dewy finish!

Must say I was impressed, so thanks again for the hints.

Can we ask hair questions in this thread btw? I have one or two hair issues I wouldn't mind resolving!

I will say this. I found 3 white hairs toward the front of my head. I actually PLUCKED those bastards out!

If anyone here has curly or frizzy hair, so do I! I like to straighten it because my hair is so thick and crazy. I use the Instyler. This is what it looks like.

I don't know if anyone has heard of it or has tried it but I decided to get it because flat ironing my hair was a pain and took maybe 2 hours to make it look decent. Usually it still had bumps and my hair looked fake. This straightener is incredible and it is really good at creating volume in certain areas or curling your ends over. Don't bother getting it from the original site though. I got mine through eBay for $25 with shipping.
