  • Any woodworkers here?

I've finally got round to carving my Thor. I found this piece of oak well over a year ago and intended to carve Thor into it, and this afternoon I did. Given this is my very first bit of carving and I chose to do it in oak, I'm reasonably pleased. However, because the carving's shallow and the wood's pale it doesn't show up very well. Does anyone have any suggestions for how to go about making it show up more?

    Yes!

I would suggest that you rub it real well with boiled linseed oil (don't know if it has the same name where you are). That will cause the end grain to darken.

If that doesn't darken it enough, use some black or brown paste type shoe polish/wax. Just rub it in and rub off enough to get the effect you like. Polish it up every now and then with shoe polish if you carry it about much.

Thanks Corby Is boiled linseed oil a product in itself or do I need to boil it myself?

LOL - Corby's having trouble with the Internet (perpetual rain and clouds). Then, today, my computer decided pass away unexpectedly.

Anyway, don't boil linseed oil to make boiled linseed oil. Oddly enough, boiled linseed oil is not linseed oil which has been boiled, it is linseed oil which has had thickening and drying agents added. God only knows why it's called boiled linseed oil instead of thickened linseed oil, but there ya go.

It's a really cheap but good and traditional finish. It's also good for maintaining old wood. It should be readily available.

Cool thanks I'll be sure to pop on with a finished picture when it's done.

Please do. It's a really nice carving and I love to see the detail better. Great job so far!

I use natural beeswax on all of my wands. It darkens them and brings out all of the detail in the wood. Wouldn't be without the stuff

So I've oiled it with boiled linseed oil and it's better, but still very low contrast. Maybe I need to accept that's just how it's going to be, after all it's oak.

I would have thought the boiled linseed oil would have left a sharper contrast than that. Still looks really cool, though, Maythe!!

I'm wondering whether 'boiled linseed oil' has less colouring in it in the uk. Seems possible.

ETA: Thanks for the compliment Chain
