Anime, Manga and other fun things!

So we thought starting a thread might be a good plan rather than filling River's comment block with anime and sailor moon stuff! This is likely the more appropriate way to go about chatting about our beloved anime characters and series :P

Crap, I started a Sailor Moon thread. I guess it's in the lap of the mods now :\

      ROTFL!!! XD
Yeah, what a mess! I didn't mind it on my blog, but who knew that a mention of Sailor Moon would start up a frenzy? I sure didn't! ^_^
I like this! Now I can talk about my closet love for the anime, without eye-rolls from the few anime fans I do know. ^o^

I have a bunch of manga, one is even from a high school buddy. I tried to translate it so I could learn kanji a bit better, but I didn't get far. It was a volume of a manga named "Super Horror".

I have have read a slew of other manga, but I didn't get all the translated copies and they're pretty obscure. The one I really love that exemplifies this is Bride of Deimos.

You can't be a proper anime fan without things like sailor moon.... You may not still love the story, but its a classic... Like the Beatles! If we love it then bugger all the "other" anime fans who don't! I mean half the people who say they don't like it still have a naruto obsession! (I promise to refrain from using certain phrases!) Now, so much of anime fandom has become too linked with video games and hentai, I swear most of us are only recreational perverts! Right?

          - - - Updated - - -

I don't buy them in Japanese, because I know I can't read it, I can look at the pretty pictures, but that's it... So manga is in English for me, anime needs a subbed version, I tend not to be fond of the dubbed, there are a few though that are dubbed really well, cowboy bebop is well dubbed, outlaw star is as well. Outlaw star is also one of my favorites too (thank you adult swim)

LOL! Yes! It is a classic! ^_^
I tried rewatching it again five years back, and laughed at all the DiC company's changes. Yet, it still made me smile and get as excited when the theme song played, like it did when I was a teen. It never got old for me, just faded away. As for Naruto... well, I tried that and have a slight crush on Kakashi, but quickly got bored of it. Sailor Moon is better, imho. ;^_^
I agree! Anime fandom have changed so much to video games and hentai. I personally don't get the point of cartoon porn, but each to his or her own. And video games are separate to me, I'm a gamer AND I am an otaku. It's not one in the same. =p

I'm much like Maria on this, that I don't buy manga in kanji, because I would never be able to understand it. XD
But, I own a few series that are English translated, like Fruits Basket and Death Note.
I use to read all of my manga for free on this site called "One Manga"... but they took down that site. Right when I was in the middle of "Oresama Teacher" too. :-(

DiC went so far as to flip the scenes with cars and busses.... Like kids (target audience) give a crap about which side of the road they are driving on in a magical girl anime.... Seriously!

It was so funny to see how moonatics handled Dic's translation of Sailor Moon. Let's just say the company's name had a "k" added to it.

Yeah, I did'nt learn about the whole DiC bastardization of cartoons till much later in life, when I was taught to ignore "DiC dubbs" (with your infamous k) but so many cartoons from back then were DiC, and when I was quite little I was very fond of a few cartoons (cant remember what they were now, but I remember that I loved the shows that had "the girls with the big eyes") but I think we forget that if someone like DiC was'nt bringing these over and "translating" them, in many cases they would never have been exposed to us, we may not have looked harder at our favorite shows, like the things done to them or not...

Sadly that is the double-edged sword about Dic, TokyoPop / Mixx, and a few others. They did some undesirable things (need I mention Speed Racer?) but without the exposure of those dubs many wouldn't be otaku today.

LOL! I was just thinking the same thing! XD
But yeah, I didn't find out until I was age 17 what DiC did to Sailor Moon. Including flipping the scenes, as Maria mentioned! That was just dumb, by the way. I don't think I would have cared what side the steering wheel was in a car or bus, being I was just a kid and cared more about the talking cats. ;u_u
AND... I was more concerned about why no one could figure out that Tuxedo Mask and "Darien" was the same guy. o_O

Wow, they screwed up Speed Racer too? o_o

Well, DiC wasn't involved with Speed Racer, but it was brought up as a point of what happens when dubbing goes bad.

Oh, well I still didn't know that Speed Racer was dubbed poorly. ;^_^
I've only seen a few episodes of that, when I was little. It never held my interest because it has car racing in it. LOL. Besides football (American), I'm not much of a sports fan. XD

It was more than just dubbed poorly, it was sent a season or a few episodes at a time to the US with no translations and no sound, it was dubbed that way, so much of it ended up being rather a mess...

Now... I have to go watch it to see what you ladies are talking about. lol. My memory of Speed Racer is so limited and vague. I just remember the boy and the monkey. XD
