Hope you all have a great Thanksgiving. We might not celebrate here on Blighty, but I think we could all benefit from counting our blessings now and then, so I can drink to that!

They seemed slimmer but I wasn't sure if that was just because the rest of me was bigger. To my surprise I've lost 3.5cm from the widest part and 3cm from the narrowest part of my right thigh. Left thigh is 4.5cm thinner at the widest point, and 3.5cm thinner at the narrowest point. I've also lost 3cm from around my hips.

Granted it took 3 months when I could have lost that in under 2 weeks by crash dieting but I did this by eating properly including lots of healthy fats. I have a better, toned look and best of all I don't have such a gaunt face or protruding bones. Got quite chubby little hamster cheeks when I smile in fact!

And I'm doing that right now.. from ear to ear! (○^人^○)

There is no way anyone could have convinced me to add fats and oils to my food a year ago. I'd have said it was a cruel gimmick to sell faddy diet books that just make you fatter. Once I realised how much the endocrine system affects our physical and mental health, and that we need fatty acids to build hormones I decided to give in and start eating the foods I've avoided for most of my adult life. Never expected the result would be weight loss. That's just crazy!

Yeah you need a certain amount of fats in your diet or your body doesn't work. I eat too many and just get fat tho...

Probably not the place for it, but I'm obsessed with this subject so can't help myself. I really believe that when people gain weight it's more likely what they're eating with the fats rather than the amount. I think most people would be shocked if they knew how much fat I consume these days. There's even a diet out there telling you fat should be up to 80% of your daily calories (although I'm skeptical of that one because it doesn't leave much space for veg).

You don't appear to have a weight problem at all, but if fat makes you gain weight, I would suggest it's a hormone thing. Estrogen if it's around hips and thighs, thyroid if it's all over and cortisone if you gain around your middle.

I'm totally sold on the endocrine approach now and will never again believe that people who are overweight just eat too much. Some do, but they're far rarer than we're led to believe! Most people with weight problems really do try to control it. They're just given poor advice.

Of course, I've also been doing visualisation and affirmations so if the eating fat to get thin idea really sounds like bunk, then I guess we'll have to agree that visualisation works!

On Saturday I caught up with some friends I haven't seen in over a year. They all said how much healthier I looked, and they even said I looked younger than I had looked a year earlier. I'm still buzzing from that.

Part of this is your gut flora and fauna at work as well...individual metabolism is partially controlled by the endocrine system, but the endocrine system responds to a number of other hormones and chemical triggers as well. Some of these triggers are provided by your diet (a reason why BPA and other plasticizing chemicals MAY be bad--emphasis on MAY, the science is FAR from settled on this account, no matter what your favorite websites might tell you*), not just WHAT you eat, but what lives in your gut and digests it (and what those bacteria specifically digest, how they digest it, and what byproducts are created during their digestion). There's a pretty big feedback loop happening in your gut that determines what nutrients (in terms of nutrients content and caloric yield) are available to your body.

*I spent most of this semester reading and doing a critical analysis of close to 200 actual studies and their papers on the subject and there is actually about equal support for BPA=bad and BPA=no effect, and both "sides" have just as many problems and flaws (sometimes the same flaws) in their studies. And is without taking into account the inherent flaws (mostly all people related) in the institution of science and the scientific methods as it is practiced. BTW, this is not a commentary on BPA bans and their usefulness (which is based on the precautionary principle).

Eric Berg, the guy I predominantly learnt all this from, encourages this too and explains how your gut flora affects parts of the endocrine system. In my case it was accidental to begin with because I knew I needed lots of iodine to counteract the effect of the cruciferous veg (which I need to reduce my estrogen). I've been having miso soup with lots of wakame with my meal at work even before discovering the endocrine approach, and miso paste is a probiotic. Natto is too, which along with the miso and soy sauce is the only soy I'm allowed, because the fermentation process destroys the phytoestrogens. I add a lot of spices to my food and even add them to my tea and coffee, and apparently this helps bacteria too. So-colled prebiotics.

Most of those who would care enough have probably already seen, but I talked about how and why I made these changes in a recent blog if anyone wants to know more. It shows how much my approach to spirituality led to my current successes! (Spoilers.. it was the white horse again!)

Oops. Only just noticed that I'd actually written the wrong thing here. It was meant to say 'what they're NOT eating with the fats...'. Kinda said the opposite there.

Luckily in my blog I say the same thing. That it's often what you're not eating, rather than what you are. So I at least don't look like I'm suddenly back-tracking.

Nah fat specifically doesn't make me gain weight. I eat too much of every thing lol. Mostly beer.

Ah yes. The alcohols. Love me the alcohols too. I do TRY to limit myself these days but just 2 weeks ago I had daytime training so ended up going 7 days without a night shift. I drank every single one of those nights.. because I could! I keep a sticker chart where I get a sticker if I do any form of exercise and every 2 stickers earns me a drink. If I haven't saved enough drinks I can't have one (although socialising gives me one free drink because drinking in a pub isn't so bad as drinking in the house watching youtube!!). That totally went out the window during my training week! Felt a bit guilty what with all this 'I'll treat you right pony body' stuff, but it was so worth it!

Still, I felt a bit bad so when I had a week off last week I only drank on 4 nights and 1 of those was just a single glass of wine. Another 2 were because I was out socialising!
