But they were doughnuts of darkness. Evil damned doughnuts, tainted by the spawn of darkness.... Which could obviously only be redeemed by passing through the fiery inferno of my digestive tract.

That can be more dangerous than drinking potentially. The water lower the electrolite count in the body and can actually cause death if to much is consumed. If done in moderation not to dangerous but if done as a replacement for another habit or to extreme collapse is certain. The US has had a few cases in recent years of people trying to drink as much water as they can to win some contest in a little time and dying from it.
I think the first thing though is that one has to really want to quit otherwise they will only keep going on. Replacing one addiction with another usually does not make it better regardless of what the new addiction is.
I know when I quit smoking it was cold turkey and a personal desire that I actually wanted to quite. But the critical aspect was that I wanted to quit for myself not because of someone else.

Seriously? "Just stop drinking"? "Drink water instead"? For a community which is usually pretty intelligent and understanding, you guys are really bloody stupid and ignorant when it comes to addiction.
Thanks for the responses all. It is a hard situation. Personally I have been able to quit my own addictions pretty easily when I put my mind to it, but for this person who is very close to me, she struggles and has a family history and comes from a Finnish lineage, so I think the addiction has a physiological component for her and she's gone back and forth but still struggles. She's tried AA but besides the religious stuff to AA she has low tolerance for trite answers.

Excuse me? I didn't see you post a better option. It's alright to disagree with what's been said but it's an entirely different thing to insult everyone that has posted here so far. I suggest you stop this particular attitude, very quickly.
