Could you function with no modern things like cell phones.

Perhaps this is a question of how far we have come in our modern world.

How would you feel, and also function in your day to day life,if your cell or other technology were to go away?

Let fly with your thoughts on this little mind game.

Some things which I grew up without, GPS for example, are very helpful now. They warn about texting & driving, but trying to unfold and study a big paper map was worse! I was in my 30's before using the internet, so I guess I know how to live without it all, but I do enjoy it, and would like to keep it.

I didn't use the internet or cell phones for anything useful until I was in my 20's...so yeah, I could survive and function without them. Heck, I just got a smart phone this past summer. But, they make a great number of things at work, and at home (especially with the hubby working long distance and two kids by myself and keeping a library in an apartment) much, much more convenient.

I like permanent net access. I'm liable to be very cranky if deprived of it. Can I function without it, sure. I just advise everyone to keep their distance.
life itself was a lightsaber in his hands; even in the face of treachery and death and hopes gone cold, he burned like a candle in the darkness. Like a star shining in the black eternity of space.

        Yoda: Dark Rendezvous

"But those men who know anything at all about the Light also know that there is a fierceness to its power, like the bare sword of the law, or the white burning of the sun." Suddenly his voice sounded to Will very strong, and very Welsh. "At the very heart, that is. Other things, like humanity, and mercy, and charity, that most good men hold more precious than all else, they do not come first for the Light. Oh, sometimes they are there; often, indeed. But in the very long run the concern of you people is with the absolute good, ahead of all else..."

If what I know as modern society were to crumble and I were able to homestead and live off the land, then it would not bother me in the slightest to have no access to mobile phones, computers, etc.

I do not know how well I would be able to function if my job was still the same and I was still expected to do the same tasks in daily life within an urban setting. Technology is a pleasant distraction for me as I dislike "city life" and the chaos of the urban lifestyle.

I grew up with the computer. So I definitely don't think I could function without it. I grew up with the really old computers, the one where you inserted disks and had to type like c:// blah blah to get into the disk. Can't remember how to do it now. Computers are so easy. I could do without a cellphone for a little while, but when I go out I need it just in case I need to call my family or in case of an emergency. I don't need a GPS, though my dad has one. I just print off instructions and follow them that way. Some things I can live without, some things I can't.

I grew up before the advent of computers, and the first one I saw(a TI99) that my sisters BF had hooked me at first sight. I think that was about 1978-9 and my first computer was a C64..

I'm a programmer, so I couldn't live without access to computers or the net! XD But I could probably live without cellphone or TV.

Of course I could LIVE without technology. I know how to survive and so forth...but do I like my tech? Heck yes. The only reason I'm not an early adopter of tech is because I just can't afford it. I love how tech enhances my life.

how are we defining modern? the last ten years? twenty? anything using electricity? If I had to go to just living off the land, I'd be in a pretty difficult spot, I'm definitely not prepared for that. But could I live without all the fancy gadgets? Sure. I'm sure I'd find plenty to do without all the distractions...

I'd be living like it was 1995 & I was flat broke again. Woo, good times.

I've worked in a smaller hotel that did everything by hand, pretty much (we had a regular phone to take reservations on but we still used ledgers & had no cash registers so everyone had to know how to count change back). A 100-room property with hard keys & ledgers is fine. Where I work now, with 4000 rooms? Well, when they first opened, they did it the old-fashioned way, too. Imagine how long it would take to check in 2000 people while handwriting registration cards & digging through drawers for keys. And they did it every single day. Of course, they had 2 full-time night auditors & relief auditors who worked 10-hour shifts with almost daily opportunities for overtime, and well over 100 front desk clerks. Now we have about 50 front desk clerks... and I'm the only full-time auditor on an 8-hour shift & they squeal if the computer takes too long & I have to have overtime. So the 'old-fashioned' ways had their perks, too.

I live happily without any I-Phone. But to live without computer? Nope...

I would have no problem giving up the few electronic gizmos(Laptop and track phone)that I do own. I love to go tent camping and cooking over a wood fire. I'm an electronic technician and have been for thirty years. I would much rather be a blacksmith, gunsmith or a carpenter.

To be honest, I'd be kind of relieved. I have trouble giving mine up because functioning without one in an environment where everyone else uses them sees difficult, but if no one had them it would be back to the days of relaxation. I'm trying to temper my phone and internet use.

I don't know what I'd do for a living though. Perhaps I could get a job at a magazine or newspaper, because sales would go up.
