    Be nice to teachers...

What you shouldn't ever say to a teacher, and (more importantly) why.

The 12 Things You Should Never, Ever Say To Teachers
Every moment of a life is a horrible tragedy, a slapstick comedy, dark nihilism, golden illumination, or nothing at all; depending on how we write the story we tell ourselves.

I will disagree with #2....but only because I'm of the opinion that when I retire from this job (or some similar middle management science professional job like it), I would consider teaching. And, I think people that say that (or at least I *hope* people that say that for the same response that the author has to #12. For me, at this point in my life (with two kids to get through school and college), I am concerned about #4...and I know that I am making more money than I would as a teacher--especially a new teacher, especially in this state. But, since a true retirement isn't so much of an option anymore (and really from a health stand point that can be a good thing), why not do something worthwhile, that I've considered (and even went to school to do) over the years? I actually had the benefit of having several teachers in high school that left professional careers (they were all science teachers) to teach, and (at least for that subject area) it actually made a difference, in terms of their expectations, their ability to teach relevance, and their passion for their discipline.

    ...but otherwise, spot on.

      For those reasons, I'd agree.

If people with life experiences and the desire to help want to take up teaching after retirement, I'm all for it. - the problem only comes in when people think of it as a hobby-job, where pay shouldn't matter, you have tones of fun playing w/ kids, and it should occupy your whole life.

You would not believe how many times I have actually been told "you work for me" (usually because their kid hasn't handed in an assignment for 12 weeks, and I'm supposed to work with them every night for four hours after school to get caught up), and the one about "you should care more about kids than pay," both of which, added together mean "you are my slave."

Maybe I should have put this in rants...

My standing answer to the whole "I pay taxes, you work for me" argument right now amounts to "so does everyone else, the expectations of several thousand of your neighbors trump you. Ain't democracy grand?"
life itself was a lightsaber in his hands; even in the face of treachery and death and hopes gone cold, he burned like a candle in the darkness. Like a star shining in the black eternity of space.

        Yoda: Dark Rendezvous

"But those men who know anything at all about the Light also know that there is a fierceness to its power, like the bare sword of the law, or the white burning of the sun." Suddenly his voice sounded to Will very strong, and very Welsh. "At the very heart, that is. Other things, like humanity, and mercy, and charity, that most good men hold more precious than all else, they do not come first for the Light. Oh, sometimes they are there; often, indeed. But in the very long run the concern of you people is with the absolute good, ahead of all else..."

John Rowlands, The Grey King by Susan Cooper

"You come from the Lord Adam and the Lady Eve", said Aslan. "And that is both honour enough to erect the head of the poorest beggar, and shame enough to bow the shoulders of the greatest emperor on earth; be content."

Aslan, Prince Caspian by CS Lewis

Technically, the school board, which is elected, works for "the people."

Teachers are contract workers working for the school board. It's them to whom we have to answer.

I think people should be nice to teachers, because they do work hard to give our children education (though I don't have a child, besides my fur children). However, i've had experiences with nasty teachers when I was young who were mean to me and I really have no clue why. So I think there are good and bad teachers. If you have children you need to work with teachers. I think it is a partnership.

I'm not a teacher, but a lot of my friends, relatives, and friends' parents are (I swear...teachers' kids tend to find each other. I know it's a common job for women, but so is nursing and I don't have a single friend whose mom is a nurse, and some of my friends' dads are teachers too). Totally agree!

Also, #11...lol. Anyone who has teachers for parents knows that it's not a breeze because they get summers off. I remember going to school on weekends, my mom marking classwork, writing report cards, and newsletters and stuff on evenings and weekends, and helping with various tasks all year, from taking stuff down from bulletin boards to putting stickers on kids work. Yes, your teachers kids are their minions. Sort of...she never made me help and I was always happy to do it.

The other thing is that it's not even full summers off. They have to pack everything up after the end of the year, and that takes a week or two. And then they have to go set everything up before school starts and get prepped, which also takes a week or two. I know that even at the most, that's still a little over a month of holidays, but I mean, in Europe EVERYONE takes a month of holidays (well, not everyone, but most people do).
