Re: What Are You Thinking About?

Thinking about flirting with vegetarianism a little. Which is weird, because I love meat. But the way I routinely acquire meat is flawed, and hunting isn't really an option for us right now. So either I cut back on the meat buying or I need to stop watching videos of cows getting happy when they're let out of the barns in spring, or hermit crabs lining up to pass their shells down, or trying to figure out why circus elephants are slaves but for horses it's somehow different.

Just as an fyi to scriptwriters, if I have your computer in a lab lavishly funded by the US government, I'm not gonna turn it on. I'm gonna pull out the hard drive attach it to a write blocker and double it then I'll see if I can get into* the copy, if yes then cool, if no then I'll try something else. If something I'm doing breaks the copy then I will make another. This process continues until I get in or give up. If for some reason, I need to turn your computer on then it will be after I have an exact duplicate of your hard drive marked "do not write to on pain of death". NO WHERE in this procedure do I willingly embark on a course of action remotely capable of destroying the data I want unless I am absolutely sure that your hard drive will literally self destruct on removal from it's case AND I'm equally sure that I (and a small army of technicians that I'll be drafting) have no way of preventing said self-destruct. This is not complex, this is basic "you are not qualified to open your mouth about digital forensics if you violate" practice. Why do your super techs not know it?

    < end rant >

*and by get into I mean read because software to read a drive image without turning on the OS of said drive is actually a real life thing and free in some cases
I also love it when people do more basic things wrong like shoot out computer monitors to stop programs from hacking the Pentagon.

Re: What Are You Thinking About?

I found a blog with 27 Pages worth Of my OTP in their tag. Gotta appreciate the little things and this is just wonderful

Unrelated but I love my friends. I told one of my top three friends that I really appreciate him and he means a lot to me and the look I got from it made me feel really happy. I smiled for like an hour straight after and skipped like a small child who has not become a misanthropic cynic.

Possibly related to the first point, but not the second, at the time of this posting it is 5:20 in the morning and I have forgotten to sleep. Again.

I think about that too sometimes. I do go without meat mainly because it is expensive, but also to give my body a cleanse for a week. I do love meat, yes. I do not like how we acquire it, and I could not hunt myself. I could raise my own animals, but then I would fall in love with them and well, then they would be apart of the family then!

I can normally gloss over a lot of the mistakes and if I were watching this particular show, I may still have enjoyed it (NCIS normally amuses me as long as I forget about just how many times the suspect would walk away scott free because Gibbs thinks that the rule of law applies to everyone else), but that specific error was just painful to hear.

Yesterday sucked. I spent most of it in tears, or on the verge of tears, and then in the evening I played the first D&D session of our new campaign last night. My character spent most of it unconscious thanks to some seriously over powered goblins. I spent three hours drawing on the tiles, and eating cookies in an attempt to cure myself of boredom.

Oh, but I like that movie!!!
I don't think anyone who's seen it thinks its an accurate representation of hacking, but it is a fun movie! I especially like the clothes the kids wear; especially Angelina's jacket, wish I had one like it

For me, becoming vegetarian was relatively easy as I never like the taste of meat much anyway. The only part that was hard was giving up the traditional american burger; I used to love those I've found that burger king serves a veggie burger, so if I want traditional fast food, sometimes I'll go there.

Right now, I'm wishing the rain would stop falling... I'd like to take the dogs for a long walk, but the weather really isn't cooperating today. It was nice earlier when it was washing off the snow and ice from the sidewalks, but I'm ready for it to clear up now and be sunny

It, too, was an NCIS episode - guy embeds an .exe in a video game that uses distributed computing to hack the Pentagon. Gibbs goes to shut down the mainframe with a gun. After shooting up the place & shutting the computer down, one of the monitors blips back to life, showing the program's still in progress. Gibbs shoots the monitor, thereby saving the Pentagon's data. Cracks me up every single time I see it.

So what we're saying is that Gibbs got tired of disregarding US law and decided to start rewriting reality in his spare time?

And yet that's what we love about him

I haven't watched the last few seasons but I used to be a fan. Abby is one of the few lab techs who's fun enough to watch that it overrides all the silly inaccuracies. Inaccuracies don't bother me so much when the show doesn't take itself too seriously. But I can't watch CSI (any of them) for more than two minutes.

What gets me about hacking scenes is the speed that they apparently do it in. Especially if they're supposed to be super genius hackers... maybe it really is a fast process for some, but sometimes it's just a bit TOO fast, ya know.

When I watched Lucy (weird film that's only moderately successful at trying to make you think about the meaning of life) there's a scene where she's working on two computers on an plane and is typing uber fast and the screen is scrolling a million miles an hour. And I'm thinking... yep, I understand that she's superhuman because she's using 70% of her brainpower... but those are two everyday laptops... pretty sure she can't bend the laws of physics THAT far.

In general, my willingness to suspend disbelief is directly dependent on how enjoyable the story and characters are... I'll overlook almost anything if I'm enjoying the storey, even if I recognise that it's inaccurate.

I don't mind the various CSIs, they just aren't interesting enough to go out of my way to see. NCIS is just pure fun. Criminal Minds is odd in that it tends to take itself seriously and I can point out some of the flaws if I care too but I enjoy it more than NCIS by a decent margin.
