Re: Perspectives on mental health & deviance / reconciling science with spirituality
I know someone who ended up in a public mental health hospital here in australia and she said it was a pretty terrible experience. She saw some people get dumped in there who the police pick up for being off their face but they don't have any overnight cells available for. There is something pagan in me that I cannot shake off. Re: Perspectives on mental health & deviance / reconciling science with spirituality
I think monetizing any field destroys any hope of providing an actual useful service. From churches to prisons, hospitals to politics, as soon as the concept of "money" is involved, any hopes of an altruistic solution go out the window.
If you want to help mentally ill people, be their friend. It sucks when the systems that we all pay for don't work the way they're supposed to...but that's why the US Constitution was written. We've got nobody to blame but ourselves (and our forebears) for fucking it up.
I'm open to suggestions, but Communism and Socialism only work on paper. Anarchy is also awesome until other people get involved.

Compassion and common sense would be a good start. Unfortunately they rarely seem to go together. :/

The problem with compassion is that there are 7 billion people on this planet and it's impossible for us to understand them all. We can only understand what we are exposed to, and the fear of new things prevents many of us from being exposed to more.
Honestly, I would be completely satisfied with "treat others how you want to be treated" followed by "treat others how they've treated you". I bit of a combination of my perspective and Medusa's

There is also the argument of risk in the case of surrogacy, prengancy can be dangerous. Sometimes you can't just get away with paying medical fees for your child.ThorSon's milkshake brings all the PF girls to the yard - Volcaniclastic

Re: Perspectives on mental health & deviance / reconciling science with spirituality
Ah if only the mental health help system wasn't so fucked up. I went through it once, a year ago. I still have awful flashbacks. Being kept up all night so that by morning I actually did seem crazy. After not being allowed to leave the ER (that I had walked into under orders of a campus counselor). And then one of the people there telling me I shouldn't try to have control over my life. And being forced to take medication I didn't want.
Not only that but there were people there who were picked up for being homeless.
More people need to be aware of what mental health issues are out there. Not just with the system but the people being put through it. I am not crazy. My sads are just sadder than most peoples. Geez. While some people may need medication, I do not.
I think I have found some solace in the spiritual path I have found though. It makes me happy and keeps me down to earth. I have never been so in control of my life and my emotions.
(I hope this was on-topic. OP used a lot of big words.)
