This blame is equally on all elected officials involved, democrats and republicans alike and if you think otherwise I'm worried you may have had too much kool-aid. This idiocy is everywhere.
I don't disagree. But when the people that oversee public health for 360 million people over 50 states have significant funding cuts that impede their response to public health crises we ought not be surprised when this sort of thing happens.

I don't see why we need more money to be competent enough to figure out that we ought to hire people qualified to do something to do it.
Of course we should. But those people have to be trained, there has to be oversight, and they need equipment. And apparently, in Texas, that hasn't happened...state public health athourities are even worse off than the federal ones...and municipalities have it the worst of all.

Re: We all gonna die,and this is why.

I tend toward Libertarian, moreso than any other political ideology other than "screw politics I don't care" but it's still a rough fit.

One of the few things that keep me from being Joe R. Conservative, right-wing supremacist, as opposed to Libertarian-leaning yet politically unaffiliated/centrist is that although I think the government should be "smaller" that is not a means or an end that is just a consequence of a government that is more efficient and cost effective and less invasive and reactionary.

The government should be as strong as it needs to to be effective; no more, no less.
The problem with that, is it requires that the role of the government be A: strictly defined and B: strictly enforced.

I don't care if taxes are lower, because I am ideologically opposed to taxation. Wait, let me explain that. I think it is a societal evil, but a necessary one given the realities of what "societies" are. As such, maximizing the positive impact and minimizing the negative impact of tax dollars is the most important thing.

There's no point to either taxes or government, if they are not effective and/or harmful to the common good.

(Also, I couldn't care about "family" or "traditional" values any less. No matter how either has been defined to me, I've always disagreed with the notions it puts forward strongly if not entirely. )

Trust is knowing someone or something well enough to have a good idea of their motivations and character, for good or for ill. People often say trust when they mean faith.

I never understand why there is never money for things like keeping people healthy or dealing with epidemics, yet mention the word 'war' and they're off like a horse out of a starting gate. There IS money - it's just politicians have ear marked it for other things.

For anyone worrying unduly about this Ebola epidemic... well, remember Swine Flu and Avian Flu a few years back? Another big panic and pharmaceutical companies made fortunes with the vaccines (well, they did in the UK at any rate.) But the epidemics themselves back then were grossly inflated and people were terrified.

I think the most dangerous epidemic of all has to be fear.

Fear is the most dangerous thing no matter its cause, people when they start to panic become the run away herd that just stampedes.

Partly it's that. But mostly it's because once people are frightened enough, they can be persuaded to tolerate any injustices, any deprivation, etc in the mistaken belief that it's all for their own good.

We all gonna die anyway; it's in the birth contract. Rather not die squirting blood out of bodily orifices, but enough vodka would probably ease the pain.

We've got one in isolation here in Virginia for observation. Ebola man had a 3 hour layover at Dulles International that they didn't think we needed to know about. My understanding is that the isolation is precautionary since he had some flu-like symptoms. Here's hoping for the best. Figure if it is positive the kid can just stay home from school.

Because they don't want panic, the CDC has underplayed the contagion factor. While Ebola is not as easily contracted as, for instance, the common cold, it can remain viable on a contaminated surface for about 2 hours under certain conditions. If drops of spittle hit you when a person sneezes, that could do it. No, there is no reason to panic, but having a population underinformed is not the best course either. Happy to say that our three people being observed in the DC area all cleared. Yay!

Ebola hit Europe this week, but I'm not really worried. As people here have pointed out, it's not transmitted all that easily. We also have really high levels of health care and sanitation in Germany (which is true of pretty much all other western countries). I don't think it will be a big problem here.

And, on the small chance it did become a big problem, I work at home and have very little contact with the public. So there's that.
