Spanish Nurse gets ebola from treating someone..

    http://www.sfgate.com/news/medical/a...rn-5805592.php

Just caught this,a nurse has been found to be positive for Ebola, and they say she got it from treating others flown back for treatment.

Some are worried that Ebola may have mutated into a much easier transmission. Really hoping that is not the case.

Honestly, none of this bothers me. I don't get caught up in health scares, as I've lived through a few now.

The story mentions that said nurse wore a Hazmat suit while treating the priest,so they are investigating why she got the infection.

One here. One there. No. Let's not panic. It's just not real. It's one or two.

From what I've read on this side of the pond, the story is more that due to cutbacks and underfunding (thanks, austerity!) Spanish hospitals simply aren't equipped to deal with ebola and they shouldn't have been repatriating people in the first place. Which is scary, but I'm willing to bet that the threat of it becoming a Europe-wide problem will nip it in the bud. Also, a lot of other countries are better prepared.

          Anyway, not worried.

Because the process by which you don and remove the proper gear only works if people are properly trained in how the proper use and wear of the proper gear, and that is more difficult to do than one thinks--its really easy to make a mistake, whether one is in the field or in a hospital setting (there was an interesting radio spot on NPR the morning during a class teaching professionals how to use these suits, and its not as simple as we, the public, think).

Since ebola can transfer between humans and animals, does that change the possible outcome? It's hard to gather up animals and quarantine them, particularly if they are wild animals...

Do we have evidence that dogs can get ebola or be carriers in a way that puts the public at risk? Primates and bats can (and are part of the issue with bushmeat as a cause)...but I've not invested enough time in figuring out whether or not other animals are actually problematic. It seems to me still that culinary customs, funeary practices, crowded living conditions, and lack of modern medical interventions are the problem. The statistics involved in ebola trasmission is actually fairly low.

Re: Spanish Nurse gets ebola from treating someone..

                      Possible scenarios:

Sick animal (pet) comes home, kid picks it up and brings it in...

It gets into the wild animal population, and we have the same problem as with bush meat...

I also don't know if it transfers to dogs or not, but it looks to me like it is a mammal thing.

However, so is rabies. Rabies gets into pets, it is in the wild, but it is also difficult to catch (bite, scratch, exchange of body fluid), so there is no huge plague of rabies going around, nor is anybody in a state of panic over rabies...

On the other hand, there is a rabies vaccine, and, in the past it was a much scarier disease (99.9% fatal) than it is now - 'tho I still don't want to get it.

The guy in Dallas died, and what I worry about is stereotyping by frightened people, and a panic about racial profiling..(Oh look its one of those African guys,he MUST have the EBOLA)

Not that we don't already have enough racism kind of stuff...

It's already happening :/ Here in Berlin, an African woman fainted (either in a shopping center or a public building...I can't remember) and everyone freaked out. The poor woman just had a touch of the regular flu.

Now it's a waiting game with the people who were exposed in Dallas. Meanwhile a boy in New Jersey died from enterovirus, which people are blaming on illegal immigrants.

I'm an RN at the Cleveland Clinic. While we haven't had anyone we suspect could have Ebola (hemorrhagic fever), we are preparing for the possibility. In all of the research I've read and the protocols that the CDC is disseminating, it can only spread by contact with bodily fluids (mucus, saliva, vomit, sperm, blood, urine, feces, etc). It is not airborne. However, it is not uncommon for transmission to occur when personal protective equipment is improperly removed.

                              - - - Updated - - -

Forgot to mention Bats and eating infected wild meat (bush meat) is also a source of infection.

As for dogs, it seems unlikely that they are spreading Ebola. I found this:

Research is scant on this subject but one 2005 study by French and African researchers observed dogs eating Ebola-infected dead animals during a 2002 outbreak in the African country of Gabon. Among the 159 dogs tested from highly infected areas, about 30 percent of the animals carried traces of Ebola antibodies in their blood, suggesting that they had been infected at some point.

However, none of the dogs got sick and the researchers could not say whether the dogs transmitted Ebola to humans. It isn’t known if Excalibur had ingested any infected biological material such as blood, feces or vomit.

Dr. Tom Frieden, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said in a news conference Tuesday that scientists had not identified dogs as a means of Ebola transmission.

“We know in rural areas of Africa, Ebola can infect mammals,” Frieden said, though he declined to comment specifically on the Spanish case.

Dr. William Schaffner, an infectious disease specialist at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, said he couldn’t understand what Spanish authorities are thinking.

“There is no biological reason for the dog to be infected that we understand,” he explained. “Pets and other domesticated animals in rural areas have not played a role in Ebola transmission that we know of.”
