    Ottawa: Parliament Hill shooting

    News from Canada:

    More about it:

He’s being called a hero for shooting a rampaging gunman dead on Parliament Hill — and it may mark the first time Sergeant-At-Arms Kevin Vickers has ever fired…

    Three cheers for Ken Vickers!

I have followed the events on TV yesterday.

Did you also hear or read about it?

I think pretty much everybody in the US and Canada did...
Every moment of a life is a horrible tragedy, a slapstick comedy, dark nihilism, golden illumination, or nothing at all; depending on how we write the story we tell ourselves.

Because I grew up in Canada, my facebook feed was (and still is) pretty full of stuff about it. I think it was pretty traumatic for everyone. Canada has a really low crime rate and gun crime is pretty rare. Also, it was the capital. I mostly watched and read the CBC coverage, because I really respect Peter Mansbridge and I found that CBC had the most informative coverage.

As I suspected, though, the shooter was a Canadian: http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/montre...-b-c-1.2809562

For those who do not quite know what a Sergeant at Arms is there for:

The duties of the Serjeant at Arms are partly ceremonial. The Serjeant at Arms carries the mace during the opening of Parliament and is also responsible for security during debates in the House of Commons, escorting Members out of the Chamber if ordered to do so by the Speaker.

              Thanx for the link!

              Here is an interesting update:

From Kirk Williams at CBC Vancouver:

"People at the Masjid Al-Salaam & Education Centre remember Michael Zehaf-Bibeau by name from 2011. He was quite rude and seemed to have a problem with non-Muslims coming to the mosque. The centre is a multi-faith facility. The chair of the mosque sat him down and said this was unacceptable and was not welcome. Shortly there after he went to Montreal. Then 3-4 months ago they found him sleeping in the mosque...this was a locked building and he either stole a key or gained entry some other way. He was kicked out and all the locks had to be changed."

CBC News gives you the latest updates from Ottawa following the fatal shootings at the National War Memorial and inside Parliament that threw the city into full police lockdown.

You know, I feel bad for his poor mother. CBC released a statement from her and she's as horrified as the rest of the country at what her son did. She not only lost a son, but has to deal with being the mother of the man who committed this very, very public crime.

And from what it seems, he wasn't brought up to be like that at all. Which kind of adds to the shock of the whole situation.

                  And this is the victim:

The opening shots that began a devastating day on Parliament Hill killed a Hamilton reservist who dreamed of being a full-time soldier and deprived his kindergarten-aged son of his father.

Cpl. Nathan Cirillo, 24, was shot while on honorary guard at the National War Memorial. Ottawa Police announced hours after the shooting that the soldier shot at the memorial had died.

He would later be identified as Cirillo, a reservist from Hamilton serving with the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders of Canada regiment. Cirillo died a short time after the attack despite frantic efforts to revive him at the base of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

Cpl. Nathan Cirillo, 24, a reservist based in Hamilton with the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders regiment leaves behind a young son. A cadet since age 13, he dreamed of becoming a full-time soldier.
