Every moment of a life is a horrible tragedy, a slapstick comedy, dark nihilism, golden illumination, or nothing at all; depending on how we write the story we tell ourselves.

Spot on. I wonder if it's because we place so much emphasis on the importance of the individual?

You can't put too much emphasis on the individual (individuals exist. Conglomeration a of people are artificial).

The problem is: which individual do you put the emphasis on - the one who does horrible things, or the one to whom horrible things are done?
