Maine Effort to Tax Nonprofits Raises Eyebrows Across the US

Ok,this by the no new taxes republicans...

Nonprofit organizations across the country are closely watching Maine as it considers becoming the first state to impose property taxes on hospitals, private colleges and summer camps under a plan being pushed by Gov. Paul LePage.

LePage has called nonprofits "takers, not givers" and argues they need to chip in for things like police, firefighters and snow removal. His proposal, which is part of his $6.3 billion budget plan, would require organizations to pay municipalities taxes if their properties are worth more than $500,000. They would pay taxes only on the property value over that threshold and get a 50 percent discount on the rate.

The Good Shepherd Food Bank estimates it would owe about $24,500 annually to the city of Auburn under the governor's plan. Spokeswoman Clara Whitney said that would mean the food bank would have to provide 100,000 fewer meals every year.

Yeh,food banks are "Takers" for sure.. Just make sure you don't tax a republican,OK?

Seriously though in our area I see more and more property taken by state supported colleges / universities who pay no taxes at all. So the tax base steadily decreases while state holdings increase.

I am thinking more about the food banks and non profits that are truly that,helping people who have no other avenue. Many hospitals now are for profit,and money is the drive.

Some churches should have to pay taxes,when they take in a LOT,but stop trying to help the needy..

It's a slippery slope for sure. I see a lot of non-profits that are hung off of other groups which actually make a profit. It's like how many food banks and such do you see that are actually run by a church or such. So the food bank is a non-profit yet everything is already a non-profit from being owned by the church and non taxable. Gets all sorts of confusing for some of them for certain.

Just want to add i'm not slamming churches its just in my area that is the most visible of such unions.

When you have multimillionaire churches that build crystal cathedral things...that is a lot of money wasted on splendor,and a lot of unfed mouths..Just saying..
