Both my parents worked long days, and would come home late at night. I would get myself up for school, and come home alone. I would make my own food, or order take out. Then, I would go to bed at a reasonable time, and get up the next day. This was a pattern from 4th grade till the end of high school, and I see nothing wrong with it, besides a possible notation of emotional neglect. But I never burned the house down, so yay me.
