Zombieland

Friday the 28th of January, 2011, is a day that I will never forget. It's one of those days where I'll be saying, my life before that day and my life after that day. The weirdest thing is that I did not see it coming. One day I was living a 'normal' life, just like you, and then everything started changing.

I woke up and found out the internet is not working. Then later found out that my cell phone isn't working either. And that's when i sensed something big was gonna happen. The government finally lost, because they have started using desperate measures. I remember thinking to myself, they won't cut off the internet, this isn't Eastern Germany nor is it China. But it happened. And that's not the only thing that happened. Quickly, all signs of a modern civilization started disappearing.

We weren't just watching protesters being shot at with rubber bullets and tear gases (later we found out live ammunition was used) we could actually hear it, and see smoke from our windows. And then at about 6PM, I felt like I wasn't living in Egypt anymore.

All police forces disappeared from the street. Not a single police officer could be found. Police stations were attacked and their weapons stolen simultaneously with prisons being attacked and hundreds if not thousands of criminals being freed. I don't want to talk about any conspiracy theories or mention my views on who was behind this, yet. All I want to mention right now is that someone wanted to burn Egypt to the ground, someone wanted to push Egypt into chaos. There was no more law, and criminals were let out to destroy Egypt.

This wasn't just a matter of looters who were looking for money and things to sell. Hospitals were being attacked. Courts were being attacked. Important documents were being destroyed. Power stations destroyed. Jails were broken into and so on. This was well organized.

I remember that night, the sound of gun shots didn't stop all night long. And then the next night things started turning worse. News started spreading around about criminals attacking homes and terrorizing people. People were calling talk shows and screaming for help. Rumors were spreading about thugs in cars going around shooting people, homes being attacked, women being raped and so on. My brother's friends even called him and told him to watch out because their building was being surrounded by thugs telling them to give them money.

It's interesting how Egypt turned into one of those towns you see in Zombie movies. That's the closest thing I can think of to give you an idea of what was going on here. I remember telling myself this very thing. We had to block our door using furniture, just like they do in those movies. And we had to find weapons and defend ourselves. But I'll talk more about that in another post. Someone wanted to push Egypt into chaos, but did they succeed? Find out in my next post!
