Indoor Herb Garden

So I've been wanting to make an herb garden in my kitchen for a while. I've been poking around Pinterest and there are some beautiful ways that people have made vertically hanging planters and I know someone who could help me build said planters. My problem is that due to lack of resources in the past, I've never really been interested in Herbalism but I have always known of its benefits to people.

Could someone help me by either replying in a post or directing me to sites or books that would help me learn:

-Best herbs to start with
-If it's possible to have an herb garden year round
-If it's a good idea to have one inside in the first place
-Any other tid bits you think useful

Green onions are super simple. If you buy a bunch of green onions and don't use the white part (bulb), they'll continue to grow in a glass of water if it gets sunlight. Just change the water often, or they'll get slimy.

I grow lemon balm (that's a Google translation, so it may be wrong) in a clay pot on the windowsill. It's quite easy to handle, just water it a bit like twice a week, trim it if it's growing too big, and it will thrive. I used to have mint too, it's low maintenance as well, but it caught lice.

Lavender? I love lavender, I tried having it indoors, but it's too fragrant to have in a small apartment.

I suppose it depends on the type of lanvender you grow. Try English Lavender (not munstead) or graves lanvender. They are softly fragrant and will not become overwhelming in small spaces.

After reading this thread, I totally want to try and have an indoor herb garden!
Having my own mint plant would be especially cool since I love mint tea, and I like green onions a lot too, I'll have to give that a try as well!

If you're uncomfortable with planting one yourself right away, some grocery and department stores sell pre-potted growing herbs like mint and rosemary.

That's awesome. I've always wanted to have lots of plants in my house but I have no green thumb. Even the one plant I've had for a decade that just sits in water, I've ultimately managed to kill.

With you there Juni,no green thumb for me also. Plants die no matter how hard I try to keep them healthy. Ex GF was really good with plants,as well as my EX Wife..

My one indoor plant looks like death. I put it outside and all the leaves bleached.

I manage to keep rosemary growing in the kitchen, with a sunny western exposure, for a couple of years and then it dies off. As for regular houseplants, I have several that are over 30 years old.
