My advice (for what it's worth) is to start small. Some women go CRAZY with all the makeup they put on. Learn to really rock a minimalist look, and then start adding other products.

I suppose what I mean by that is: I haven't a clue how to wear makeup, and I'm just a little older than you. So when I decided to learn, I started with one thing: lipstick. Once I could really rock some lips, I learned about foundation and mascara. Sometimes, I wish I could put on more than that (I have no idea how to use eyeshadow/liner/blush/etc) ...but I find that a bit of mascara, and some popping lipstick is all I actually need.

That is such a good tip actually! I never thought to do that.

@kijani: I also second youtube tutorials. I'm hopeless with makeup too (and I'm 31, so don't feel too bad!), but I like watching make-up tutorials on youtube. I'm not into all that false eyelash and contact lenses stuff though. Youtube tutorials seems to have a lot of that.

In case you're interested, I really like watching tutorials by this girl: http://youtu.be/Iv9KBnrkYJc (Her videos are Japanese and English, so you get some Japanese listening practice while you watch too ^^). Obviously, I don't use the same products, as I have a very different skintone, but I like her techniques.
夕方に急なにわか雨は「夕立」と呼ばれるなら、なぜ朝ににわか雨は「朝立ち」と呼ばれないの? ^^If a sudden rain shower in the evening is referred to as an 'evening stand', then why isn't a shower in the morning called 'morning stand'?

Lipstick tips? Every single one I've ever tried has dried my lips out horribly, I can't really lick my lips, eat things, smoke cigarettes/pipes without getting some of the stuff off.

Has anyone tried lip tar? Lip stain? Got tips? Help a total makeup virgin out.

I buy the really expensive stuff. But a good tip is to use a lip liner, and colour in your ENTIRE lip with it BEFORE you put on lipstick. Helps the colour stick around for longer.

I use Revlon Colorstay lipstick; and its hardly the expensive stuff. It feels a little dry when you put the color on while its setting, but then you put the gloss on, and it sort of disappears. I wore it to the dentist and it didn't even come off on the hygienist's gloves. She was totally amazed.

I use a not-too-waxy lip balm first, like Blistex, then lipstick, then blot gently. It will come off on stuff a bit, but it doesn't dry my lips out like lipstick alone will.

I always experienced this on the other side of the issue -- as a woman who vehemently does NOT wear makeup. I was asked this constantly in high school, "oh you'd look so pretty if," "you should do this, you should do that," and I always balked at the idea. I don't LIKE makeup. I hate the way it feels, I like to touch my face, I don't want to bother with it, and I don't wash my face enough to warrant clogging up all my pores. It was never an argument against the girls who wore makeup because I don't think it matters whether or not someone wants to enhance or deceive. IT'S MAKEUP. If you think what is on the outside is deception then you're a simple fool who probably has some serious issues regarding women because a woman is allowed to dress and present herself any damn way she pleases -- including bare bones and just hoping that someone will like you for the simplicity and the bravery it takes to say "fuck it, what you see if what you get."

                    Summary: haters gonna hate.

You know I really think it is a case of 'Damned if you do, damned if you don't'. I don't wear a lot of make-up day-to-day, but I like to really go for it when I am going out somewhere. When I go out with people for the first time with full make-up I always get 'Wow, don't you look different with make-up. You should wear it more often.' (Which is the ultimate back-handed compliment by the way!) Yet I work with girls who wear full make-up everyday and people constantly remark on it. 'She wears way too much make-up for work.' 'She really should tone it down a bit.'

Really I think it is all a bit ridiculous. You wanna wear a lot of make-up, have at it. You don't want to wear any, well you have at it as well. Who really cares anyway?!?

I wear quite a lot of make up, all the time. It's holidays atm, and I'm not wearing any, and I look weird when I look at myself in the mirror..... I've been wearing eyeliner since I was 12, I don't like going out without it.

Ok, I'm kind of wet behind the ears with this whole thing, but is there a specific WAY to apply it to make sure it stays like that? Does it come in the typical tube? Is it like paint with a brush?

Does anyone know about lip tar? I've heard good things but the word TAR freaks meh out.

Also, what about lip stain? Is there a difference? Are there any useful organic lipsticks where I'm not pumping my luscious lips full of chemicals?

I line my lips with a lip liner first, which helps you to put the lipstick where you want it, and helps to avoid it 'running'. Also if you're being fancy it can help to give you more interesting lip shape.

A stain is a colour that doesn't wear off, and will last longer. Needs less reapplying.

No idea about tar, sounds weird. I don't use a brush, unless I'm doing some of that fancy stuff I mentioned. And I don't know about organic lipsticks, but I only buy Natio and Innoxa branded stuff, as they don't test on animals. Also Inglot, but they are more expensive.
