I ended up asking him after all! He mentioned casually listed me when he was talking about people he still had to get gifts for (effectively establishing that we ARE exchanging gifts), and so I took the window to mention that I also still had to get a gift for him, and wasn't sure what to get. He said he'd like a Moleskine notebook, so I got him that, and I'll get him a gift certificate for the movies (he likes to go to the movies).
