    Re: Natural Birth?

I had quite a lot of children by modern standards. And I know absolutely sod-all about what type of birth is 'best.'

Because for me, the best birth results in a healthy baby and a healthy mother. That's what matters. How you reach that stage (it was darkly rumoured that my mother relied upon copious draughts of whiskey for her births) is obviously going to be open to debate.

But not by me. All I can say is - go with your instincts, but be prepared to be flexible.

      This.

Ultimately, how the baby comes out is meaningless. Its what you do for the next 18 + years of its life that makes you a good mother (or not).

As I'm neither a medic or ever going to worry about bearing a child, I have no comment on most of this thread but I heartily endorse the above statement for life in general.

Plans die upon contact with pretty much everything, rigid plans take you with them when they go. Flexibility is good.
life itself was a lightsaber in his hands; even in the face of treachery and death and hopes gone cold, he burned like a candle in the darkness. Like a star shining in the black eternity of space.

        Yoda: Dark Rendezvous

"But those men who know anything at all about the Light also know that there is a fierceness to its power, like the bare sword of the law, or the white burning of the sun." Suddenly his voice sounded to Will very strong, and very Welsh. "At the very heart, that is. Other things, like humanity, and mercy, and charity, that most good men hold more precious than all else, they do not come first for the Light. Oh, sometimes they are there; often, indeed. But in the very long run the concern of you people is with the absolute good, ahead of all else..."

John Rowlands, The Grey King by Susan Cooper

"You come from the Lord Adam and the Lady Eve", said Aslan. "And that is both honour enough to erect the head of the poorest beggar, and shame enough to bow the shoulders of the greatest emperor on earth; be content."

My niece is lactose intolerant, and taking her off breast milk was one of the best things my sister did. She tried all the change-your-diet things first and eventually we just had to do something different. We stuck her on lactose free formula a voila... totally different baby. In hindsight, my nephew probably would have done better during his first few months of life if she had taken him off breast milk too, but there was SO much pressure to breastfeed and so much guilt heaped onto a mother who doesn't breastfeed that she was too scared to go against it. One of my workmates' first child also had to come off the breast and actually ended up in hospital being tube fed because she wasn't taking to breast milk and was losing weight, even when she was expressing milk to be tube-fed to her.

If my sister lived two hundred years ago, she and my nephew would be dead and my niece would never have been born. Sometimes 'natural' needs a bit of help.

            Re: Natural Birth?

I know when I go to finally have kids, I would prefer to be in a hospital where if something goes wrong, there will be doctors there to help take care of me. My husband was born 8 weeks premature and had to be in an incubator for a while, and I already know I've got problems with my back and hips because of my scoliosis so taking those into account......my thought is better safe than sorry. Would I probably be more comfortable at home where I can be relaxed? Sure. However-knowing my luck, something would end up going wrong.
