Re: 24 injured in knife attack at High School
While I'm in general agreement that one can kill quite easily without a gun, in the interests of fairness, the kid hasn't successfully killed anyone with kitchen knives yet. That may change with the victim in critical, we don't know yet but shooting stories generally come with on site fatalities.
Fairness satisfied, I think the school was profoundly lucky. There are a variety of ways the body count could've gone up without guns being involved. The agressor didn't put a lot of planning into this and the school was fortunate to have security and staff on hand willing to meet him head on.life itself was a lightsaber in his hands; even in the face of treachery and death and hopes gone cold, he burned like a candle in the darkness. Like a star shining in the black eternity of space.

Other things, like humanity, and mercy, and charity, that most good men hold more precious than all else, they do not come first for the Light. Oh, sometimes they are there; often, indeed. But in the very long run the concern of you people is with the absolute good, ahead of all else..."

Re: 24 injured in knife attack at High School
What the fuck is wrong with USA's society? There has been only one case of school attacks like that in the entire time I remember seeing the news over here. I might sound rude, I'm not trying to say US is inherently bad or any harsh words like that, I'm genuinely worried and interested on what are the social causes for these school attacks, cause it's something awfully rare where I live. I can provide a lot of news about violence over here if you guys think I'm claiming I live in a more peaceful place, though

Apparently knife wounds rarely kill people, that's why most of the time you hear about fatal stabbings it's "the victim was stabbed forty-seven times."Trust is knowing someone or something well enough to have a good idea of their motivations and character, for good or for ill. People often say trust when they mean faith.

Re: 24 injured in knife attack at High School
Very true. I wasn't addressing fatalities, myself. My interest was purely on the weaponry involved. A couple of kitchen knives, supposedly.
@Ektor, I dunno what the hell it is with our kids pulling stunts like this. I know that a huge number of people, generally speaking, immediately start looking to place blame somewhere. Often, on the parents. Sometimes the culture and sometimes just statistically speaking - like, "it almost never happens but when it does it's HUGE news, so the general public gets the impression that it happens a lot". I just don't give two shits about blame. I would want to know the root cause and see about remedying that. Blame just gets everyone no place. Until the lawsuits come out, and then someone gets richer.
To be brutally honest, however, I am completely apathetic to the situation, there.

You make a sound point there. I was trying to imply that the school attacks are a recurring social phenomenon, and as such they have a root cause somewhere. I agree with you.

Re: 24 injured in knife attack at High School
I think teens watch too much Anime such as Bleach and horror movies. From them, the idea of taking a weapon (knife/gun) and harming someone comes to their minds.
Three months ago, I think, there was a case of a pupil who had thrown a chair on his teacher in elementary school, because the teacher asked the kid to do something... I can't recall what.

Re: 24 injured in knife attack at High School
I don't think that's why at all. Murder rates vary greatly by region and country and don't tend to correlate with the consumption of media portraying violence. It's sort of like how teen pregnancy isn't a huge issue in Germany, even though you can watch softcore porn at 16 (as long as there is no penetration, you can watch it at 16, basically). People are quick to blame the media for these sorts of things, but I think the problem lies in a shrinking sense of social cohesion. We aren't the communities that we once were and huge portions of the social contract are breaking down.
On top of that, we still have ridiculously low support for mental health problems.

Re: 24 injured in knife attack at High School
There is the "Isolation" factor, with society becoming(perhaps always was) a pecking order, some people and kids get pushed out of the main body of society. Being excluded can and most likely does induce a LOT of anger that is pushed down until a point that it explodes with little warning.
I think perhaps if we understood this on a personal level, we would not "outcast" others by labeling them "Different"
We are ALL different in many ways, and inclusion as a mind set may be a solution in the long run.MAGIC is MAGIC,black OR white or even blood RED

Here's an interesting article which is, I think, relevant to the issue:
How to Stop Violence: Mentally ill people aren’t killers. Angry people are.Every moment of a life is a horrible tragedy, a slapstick comedy, dark nihilism, golden illumination, or nothing at all; depending on how we write the story we tell ourselves.

Re: 24 injured in knife attack at High School
Not sure how much stock I would put in this, but it definitely makes one wonder... (keep in mind this is for *violent* crimes, whereas most of the maps that put the US as the "worst" are where people had interactions with the police. That could be virtually anything, from bicycle theft to vagrancy (we have a lot of both)). Again, I don't put a whole lot of stock in this...

The student's choice of weapon may be because he couldn't get firearms being that he's only 16 and apparently didn't plan this attack very well. If he had used guns fatalities would've been much higher. As he began his attack a student pulled a fire alarm in an attempt to evacuate the building which flooded the halls with people. I haven't been able to find any information on if the family had guns in the house however I did find several that claimed they were "Brady Bunch" like and were well bonded. The kid is different from the typical shooter in several ways since he (reportedly) has no form of mental illness, had many friends, strong family connections and was altogether well adjusted and seemingly accepted. I'm sure more information about the kid will come up and I'm waiting for someone to say he was the victim of bullying or abuse. Typically these are things everyone says when this happens, oh he was quiet, I never would've thought him, good family, because quite frankly most people don't look for things or pay attention unless they've been trained to. However for the purposes of this discussion I would be inclined to treat him like a school shooter.
I thought this was interesting. It's a document that the FBI put out regarding the typical traits of school shooters and the schools they go to, as well as finding, accessing and dealing with threats. http://www.fbi.gov/stats-services/pu...school-shooterCirce
