Intellectually, yes, they are the same thing. But only the term chickpea is acceptable.

Don't ask me why, I have no idea...it is not logical.

I don't care. Just gimme. We are Hispanic, so my family calls them garbanzo beans. I had no idea they were the same thing till years later to be honest. I think they taste like mild cheddar cheese. They are great in salads. And of course humus.

This reminds me of cilantro vs coriander. And aubergine vs eggplant. And courgette vs zucchini. I know what I use, but you have to know all of them if you want to cook them.
