Re: GMO animals
This will become a major issue as they phase this in. Now if they do the "Grow meat in the lab thing" that will please Vegie types,BUT may upset the anti genetic alteration people. Just seems that lab grown meat needs genetic altering I think.MAGIC is MAGIC,black OR white or even blood RED

No. It is now possible, so it can not be prevented.
Ethics and controls and protocols need to be established by and for those engaged in doing that research.Every moment of a life is a horrible tragedy, a slapstick comedy, dark nihilism, golden illumination, or nothing at all; depending on how we write the story we tell ourselves.

Define genetic engineering. Selective breeding is a form of gene manipulation. It's a rather slow one but it fits the bill. There are other more radical forms of gene mod floating around so define genetic engineering and I might have a comment.Life itself was a lightsaber in his hands; even in the face of treachery and death and hopes gone cold, he burned like a candle in the darkness. Like a star shining in the black eternity of space.
Yoda: Dark Rendezvous
"But those men who know anything at all about the Light also know that there is a fierceness to its power, like the bare sword of the law, or the white burning of the sun." Suddenly his voice sounded to Will very strong, and very Welsh. "At the very heart, that is. Other things, like humanity, and mercy, and charity, that most good men hold more precious than all else, they do not come first for the Light. Oh, sometimes they are there; often, indeed. But in the very long run the concern of you people is with the absolute good, ahead of all else..."
John Rowlands, The Grey King by Susan Cooper
"You come from the Lord Adam and the Lady Eve", said Aslan. "And that is both honour enough to erect the head of the poorest beggar, and shame enough to bow the shoulders of the greatest emperor on earth; be content."
Aslan, Prince Caspian by CS Lewis

Re: GMO animals
Yes... The term GMO - Genetically Modified Organism - to actually have a real meaning should include the specific idea of actually modifying genes, rather than manipulating a genome, which is what is done in selective breeding.Every moment of a life is a horrible tragedy, a slapstick comedy, dark nihilism, golden illumination, or nothing at all; depending on how we write the story we tell ourselves.

I'm sorry, Anunitu. That speaks nothing at all.
In order to create the illusion of saying something, it relies on ignorance about selective breeding, animal husbandry (how an animal is fed and housed), use of chemical adjuncts to feed, etc.
This is where Thalassa needs to come along and launch and explanation of "epigenetics."
I'd do it myself but I lack the qualification do do much beyond recognize it's existence, and bring it up in the appropriate context...Every moment of a life is a horrible tragedy, a slapstick comedy, dark nihilism, golden illumination, or nothing at all; depending on how we write the story we tell ourselves.

I'll try to get to this later today, when I need a real break, not just a *waiting for program to load* break.Last edited by thalassa; 13 Aug 2015, 07:24.Wonderful Life: The Burgess Shale and the Nature of HistoryPagan Devotionals, because the wind and the rain is our Bible

Re: GMO animals
I agree B. De. actually, that pic seems to be in every anti genetic story...I am not as concerned about the science as I am about how it effects my eating habits..lab grown meat, maybe if it has the right nutriments and also does not loose the taste factor....
And Thal, damn you be smart lady.....and B. De. as well...ya must have been something as kids..MAGIC is MAGIC,black OR white or even blood RED

But I have just as much of an issue with most current selective breeding in both companion animals and livestock, and I also think that needs to be more stringently regulated.
I have no long answer today, because my brain and energy levels aren't up to it right now.
