    Re: THE RANT THREAD!

It seems that no matter how hard I try I am barely financially surviving. After all of my bills I have $18 left to my name. I couldn't afford to get my mom a Mother's Day gift, which really bothers me, even though she said she doesn't care.

I know that most people kind of live to whatever amount of money they make. However my parents talk about how their budget is "really tight" right now; then my mom comes over today and shows me a new dress, three pairs of shoes, two necklaces, and a ring she bought her self "just because." Not to mention the real reason her budget is "really tight" is because she is saving up to have $9,000 worth of plastic surgery.

I honestly could scream. At this rate my wedding wont be until 2040.

I've been there, and I still mourn its death from time to time. Otherwise I've lost all patience for folks who break promises.

Why can't I just buckle down and study? WHY AM I TAKING POWER AWAY FROM MYSELF? Because I can study. I'm just not, and why is that? Because I think I'll fail? Then what the hell was school for in the first place if you're just gonna roll over and die at the first sign of trouble? YOU'RE BETTER THAN THAT, DAMNIT! NOW PROVE IT

                Re: THE RANT THREAD!

I hate breaking promises, even ones I've made to myself, so I'm not at all a happy bunny to admit that there is no chance I'll succeed in my resolution to be proficient in Japanese by 2013. When I wrote up my study plan, I didn't count on how massive the lessons are in Japanese For Busy People III, so I am already five weeks behind schedule. I'll never make that up. Each week is anything from 60-100 new words and I just can't remember that many in a week. I don't get enough practice either. Once a week for two hours, is really not enough time to practice speaking to the level I am aiming for and although I know others who are learning the language, no one will practice with me. Hell, even the jap threads here are dead. I loved it when Fiddlypoppin was helping out and when Kijani was doing her lessons, but now... Nothing is happening. Maybe it was me.. maybe I was too enthusiastic... Or pushy? I just want my next trip to Japan to be a chance to polish off my skills. I want to join in when everyone is chatting around the table, instead of only understanding if I am addressed directly in nice slow simple sentences. I want to be able to say more than a few broken sentences to Ryugo's wife who doesn't know any English. I won't give up, but I need to rethink my goals. It would be nice to be able to do whatever we set our minds to, but I have poured my heart and soul into this and getting nowhere. I guess I have to accept that I'm just not intelligent enough to master a second language.

You are indeed smart enough to master a language. I just don't have the time (or nearly as much as I had hoped) to devote to re-learning Japanese.

                      Re: THE RANT THREAD!

I can totally sympathise on that one. It takes a ridiculous amount of ones time. I feel a bit better now I've had a good sleep. I just felt so hopeless this morning: I was like a cranky child. I even burst into tears outside the swimming pool -over tha holocaust of all things!

I hope it didn't come over as 'no one will play with me!'. Sorry if it did. I'm just so disheartened. You read all the time about people who claim they became fluent in a year. I've never met them so maybe they're lying. I've known people who live and work in Japan, who aren't fully fluent after 6 years! So I'm comparing myself to an ideal, not reality. I know that and DanieMarie's description of the learning process she went though, eased much of my angst over this, but I still dispair sometimes.

I've re-written my study plan and no longer insist that I learn EVERY word before moving on. I'm gonna gut out the technical vocab 'reboot, attach a file for example, are expressions I'm unlikely to need while drinking with friends. I'm also gonna cut out keigo expressions. I can recognise them when I hear them, and I won't need to speak like that, so it can wait until AFTER I master everything else. Also, I'm scratching the JLPT plans. It sucks, because I can comprehend the listening section at N3 so in theory, could handle the exam if only I knew kanji. But adding the kanji is just making things even slower and bottom line is, I don't need to read. Would be nice, but not necessary.

He's also lucky it was just shoes. My dog managed to open a drawer & ate a package of safety pins, some iron-on seam sealer and a sewing needle, complete w/thread. :O

Miraculously, she was fine. Pooped it right out after a nerve-wracking 24 hours.

It was weird, though. I think it was intended to happen. I used to work for the local justice system. A couple of years ago, we had a shooting at the Federal Courthouse here in Vegas. It happened around 8am, which would have been the normal time I would have been arriving to work in the same vicinity as the shooting. Except the dog ate the sewing kit (and some incense, part of the drawer, some sweetgrass smudges & whatever else was in there) the night before & I called in sick so we could take her to the vet specialist. I had a little sit-down with the Universe & told it that it could have chosen a less life-threatening thing to happen to make me call in sick.

We put child-safety locks on everything, threw away a bunch of small but potentially dog-killing objects, scour the backyard for stray landmines after every windstorm. Having a dog who will literally eat anything is worse than having a toddler.
