Re: Whats everyone reading now or read lately

Heh, I apparently dropped a book and reversed the order of 6 and 7 in my head but 7 introduces some entertaining people though one of the ones I like least gets the most screen time in the next 15 books or so.
life itself was a lightsaber in his hands; even in the face of treachery and death and hopes gone cold, he burned like a candle in the darkness. Like a star shining in the black eternity of space.

    Yoda: Dark Rendezvous

"But those men who know anything at all about the Light also know that there is a fierceness to its power, like the bare sword of the law, or the white burning of the sun." Suddenly his voice sounded to Will very strong, and very Welsh. "At the very heart, that is. Other things, like humanity, and mercy, and charity, that most good men hold more precious than all else, they do not come first for the Light. Oh, sometimes they are there; often, indeed. But in the very long run the concern of you people is with the absolute good, ahead of all else..."

John Rowlands, The Grey King by Susan Cooper

"You come from the Lord Adam and the Lady Eve", said Aslan. "And that is both honour enough to erect the head of the poorest beggar, and shame enough to bow the shoulders of the greatest emperor on earth; be content."

So...I just read a book that I thought would be great and it was actually quite horrible. Ever read something where the person took a couple of ideas that could have been good, dressed them up in horrible history and pseudointellectual bullshit, and just went to town with it? Plus its so hypocritical I just wanted to throw the book away, and coming from me, that's pretty much blasphemy. Terrible. terrible book. The practical information part of the book can easily be found in a dozen different (better and more expansive) books or even on the net for free. The rest of the book is just half-assed opinions based on quarter-truths but pawned off as fact with little to no exposition or thoughtfulness.

      I'm so disappointed.

          Unlearn, Rewild

I thought it would be something like Edward Abbey and John Muir meets Euell Gibbons plus my 1950s Army survival guide.

          It wasn't.

It was a human hating dystopian self-hatred pity party (yes, I realize that is redundant, that is how the book felt) plus mediocre survivalism tips.

I hate human hating dystopian self-hatred pity parties. Self loathing is one of the more disturbing vices.
Every moment of a life is a horrible tragedy, a slapstick comedy, dark nihilism, golden illumination, or nothing at all; depending on how we write the story we tell ourselves.

I like human hating books. Especially when they involve zombies. Gets all my aggression out.

For the past few weeks I've been a wee bit addicted to the show Archer. Then on one of those little in-between commercial "ask archer" moments he mentions a book that fans can read all about his favorite guns, cocktails, women and espionage in. I assumed it was a fictitious book (as in, not existing), but I got bored and did a google search and the book actually exists... So that's now on my reading list for the very near future. ^^

                  It's called "How to Archer."

I've been enjoying Harry Potter fanfiction for the past couple of weeks. There's actually some good ones out there.
"In the shade now tall forms are advancing,
                        And their wan hands like snowflakes in the moonlight are gleaming;
They beckon, they whisper, 'Oh! strong armed in valor,
The pale guests await thee - mead foams in Valhalla.'"

I finished The Anabasis ("The March Up Country" it might also be known as/translated as) by Xenophon. It was great; short perhaps, but definitely sweet.

I went on amazon the other day expecting to order Metro 2034 by Dmitry Glukhovsky but it wasn't available yet so I ended up ordering The Sagas of Ragnar Lodbrok because I've enjoyed the TV show Vikings but would like to read about the real Ragnar.
