Hoping that the whole "blackmail the love interest" scheme that has popped up in a new show ends with the would be blackmailer summarily outmaneuvered and smashed at an opportune moment instead of the long drawn out angstfest that I'm expecting to see from it. Yes, extortion is a common and believable ploy but can we break formula for once and make it fail utterly? Please!

I'm up at almost 1am wondering if there are any traditions anywhere where, instead of trying to attract the attention of divine beings, the entire point was to pass through life with no notice taken. Not even deflecting wrath, impurities, whatever....just be as invisible as possible to whatever forces that be you believe in.

Also, happy news: after two weeks, we found our cat. And he was not a kitty splat. We still need to take him to the vet tomorrow, though. Two weeks on the street was not kind to an elderly cat.

See, that's kind of the opposite of the way I learned. Chopsticks for things like chicken balls, dim sum, sushi, potstickers, tonkatsu, teriyaki chicken. Just grab one or two things and eat them. Pretty much the only thing that's like you say is noodles.

I bust out the fork for non-sticky rice, and stuff like chow mein where it's all small pieces. Chop sticks just feel like they take twice the effort to get half the results of a fork, they just feel like the wrong tool for the job. Every bit as much as eating most soups with a fork would feel like..

Huh. I wonder why the difference. I've always felt chopsticks were about shoveling. Maybe it's that I haven't been around too much of the other meals, like dim sum or sushi, that is larger or mouthful-size. Most foods I've had were small morsels, even like that tonkatsu (katsudon, actually) and the teriyaki chicken were diced fairly small.

I always thought the point of chopsticks was the versatility... that they could be used for picking up AND shoveling. Have you ever seen an Asian person eat rice or slippery noodles with chopsticks? They definitely shovel, usually with the bowl held in their hands close to their mouth. I've also seen Asian people do some pretty amazing delicate pick ups with chopsticks.

I was taught to use chopsticks by a first generation Australian-Chinese (ie her parents immigrated from China, but she was born here) friend in high school. Her family pretty much never used forks... just chopsticks or those ceramic soup spoons for broth.

Also... as far as I'm aware, the 'proper' way to eat dim sum, wanton or sushi is to shove the whole thing in your mouth without biting it. As far as I can tell, the really big style sushi and dim sum is a Westernised thing.

I wear an aluminum foil hat.

It's a little known fact, but aluminum foil is impenetrable to omniscient beings.

I know this is true because I read it in an old book.

We've been moved into the new place for a couple of days now. I absolutely love it! My room isn't fully unpacked yet, but it's so cozy The chin is adjusting well and my roommates love him. We don't have internet yet, but when we do get I'll post some pics for you guys. Take care, everyone!
